Welcome to AO Brendan.
I had a similar thing on my old 944 and it was due to a sticking gauge in the fuel tank, so you may want to start there if it continues.

Hi & welcome.

This has been well covered. On 2004 build cars it could be a speedo problem. Cure is a change of speedo resulting in lost miles

The wife's 156 SW (05 plate) had a similar problem that turned out to be the sender unit / fload in the petrol tank under the rear seats.

A dealer jobby I reckon :(

What year is it??
