I have an Alfa159 2008 with 48000 km, since last week the EOBD system failure light is glowing steadily saying "check your engine". The garage claims that the "Timing chain" should be replaced.
Are there any other option?

Timing chain or cam sensor.

Have you noticed the car running rough/low fuel consumption before the light came on?
That would be a sign of a stretched chain.

The cam sensor would be cheaper.

If the car is still under warranty I'd get them to change the chain.

Also complain to Alfa Romeo even if the warranty period is over as the
stretched chain is a know issue with this engine and you might be able to get
them to contribute.

Once fixed the car is meant to run noticeably better.

It depends on the fault code it generated.

The JTS is fuel sensitive and lambda faults can be thrown up if fuel quality is poor, I know Israel often has poor quality petrol as it knackered the injectors on a friends JTS.

If its otherwise driving OK, and the fault is cleared, try some injector cleaner and wait to see if the fault recurs.

Worst case is that the timing chain may well have stretched.
