Hi All,

On sunday my GTV 2.L TS engine decided to let go after just 3 weeks of ownership, If anyone could help with sourcing a replacement it would be greatly appreciated.I believe
that would be my cheapest solution but if anyone thinks the engine could be saved please let me know as i need this like a hole in the head.I have got price on a 23 mile(yes 23 miles on clock) engine taken from a water damaged 147 that was unregistered and laying in garage yard of 950euro with belts changed supply only.Any thoughts/suggestions welcome.

Video below of bottom end failure not a nice sound.

if i were u i wud contact ti autos 018386567 or Don Baker Alfa Romeo Service and repair by Don Baker Ireland first about a replacement and fitting that replacement. I know Don often has stuff lying around he should be able to help.
Cheers Alfa155, spoke to Don today and he has two engines available right now, just trying to get my head around the cost as i wasn`t planning on this after three weeks.
I will just have to bite the bullet and get it done.

The one from a 147 be different, its a bit of work you need to do to make it work in your car. Its not a straight swap. I saw that engine you are talking about. Very good condition etc. But as far as I know you need 166 engine ? Im not sure 100%

I have a 166 engine good condition but its taking oil, compression test done its acceptable but needs piston rings. I can let it go very cheap if you need. Its up and running now and I have compression test with me as well. If you like to see the car and the engine pm me. You could put it in for now if you are short on money, and within next 3-4 moths you can do piston rings. As I said Ill let it go very cheap and its a good condition with timing belts just done. I can swap it for you. Have a alfa specialist lad that came to Ireland 2 months ago. He be happy to do this cheeper that garage.

Compression test

1 - 17,5 / 2 - 14,5 / 3 - 14,2 / 4 - 14,5

I found and bought another 166 2 days ago for mi self so the other 166 is going for parts :)

PM me and we can discuss details.

Sheener, as i told you on the other thread i have a P1 150bhp engine from a GTV but its north of the border from you. Engine was running before removal and had a new variator at last belt change which was late 2010. So, its effectively a bolt in and go jobbie.

I forgot to get back to you about the engine. I found another 166 I bought 2 days ago with twice as low milage than mine. Will be braking mine and leave the one I got recently. Thanks anyway.

Quoted 1500euro supplied and fitted brand new engine still sitting in crate.
Very tempting with a new engine i would have very well sorted GTV with all the other work that was already done before my ownership but its money i don`t have at the moment. Anyone i talk too so its a good deal would you agree???

I was thinking to do it my self. But...its was cheaper to buy another Alfa ;) with a perfect engine and low milage. Not only I have the engine but another car ! So funny but true ;)

And the deal is very good I don't think there is any other brand new engine left around UK and IE.

Ye it is expensive, i could buy 147 or 156 for about 800 and wait till i have the money to fix GTV. The GTV is still on english plates so VRT, NCT and tax bring it up to nearly 2500 to be road legal. What have you for sale?

The 166 ts engine is actually the same as all the other TS eninges found in 147,156,gt etc.

BUT the sump is taller on a 166 so would need to be swapped over along with the oil pickup pipe (becasue the 166 one is too long)

HTH :)

I dont know what price Don gave you but remember wih a new engine you have to break it in slowly also there is just as much of a chance it could let go as any other. It wouldnt bother me either way as long as its clean and has no signs of neglect etc. I also think you should go with somebody who has a good track record of this type of job (Don or Ti) just for the peace of mind. Best of luck with whicheer option you go with.

How long is the run in on a new engine, never had the pleasure myself. Surely you would have a better chance with a new engine vs used, one of the lads on here has been good enough to offer me a used engine at a good price but really don`t know what way to go.:(
