Hello all.
Been looking on the forums but I'm not too good with searches so thought I'd ask.
I've had a 156 1.8TS Sportwagon for a few months now but I have a couple of questions relating to the engine.
1. Should it rev very easily to the red line? Mine feels like it's going to go bang at about 5500rpm. It seems to slow down it's progress quite a bit once up there.
2. The engine has a whine to it, Cambelt too tight or is it normal?
3. Engine light is coming on. How can I read the fault codes to find out what's up with it?
4. seems to use oil quite a bit, is that normal?

Suspension is shot, but it's still the most comfortable car I think I've ever driven, which is why I bought one. Front end is quite amazing, never seems to loose grip when thrown in.

Many thanks.

right you have an engine management light on and the engine is behaving abnormally and you wonder if you have an issue.....? I think you can answer your own question.

coz I am feeling nice though I shall atempt to provide you with something of an insight to your problems.

1. YES - the engine should rev nice and freely to the red line, all the time and every time. the twin spark motors will be one of the nicest 4 cylinder naturally aspirated motor you will come across. you should find that you will get a bit of an increase in power at 3,000 rpm and then rev around to 5,000rpm where it should take off like a nymphomaniac at a college party! that should carry round to the rev limiter when you change gear and do it all over again.

if it isnt doing that YES you do have a problem - the engine management light will give you clues to this.

I am going to go out on a limb and say its probably going to report a missfire to you, likely as the coil packs may either be short, spark plugs worn out or oil in the plug wells (will come back to this later).

wining noise hard to say, possibly not normal, but could be related to the engine issues you are having.

oil use, some use shed loads, some dont use any. if you think it is beyond excesive get a compression test done to see if its still up to scratch.

front suspension should not be ignored. if nothing else it will sound awaful and cost you a fortune in tyres, replace any worn out arms when possible.

engine fault codes can be read by a deal, independent specialist of by downloading some software, FiatECUScan or Alfadiag, depending upon which ECU you have you may chose one or other. you also want a KKL use cable and laptop.

as for your engine problem, if your car isn't kept up on its service schedule, get it serviced, as plugs maybe shot (there are 8) at factory they're long life often people replace with normal plugs. and get them to read the codes whilst at it.

Thanks for your reply there. Much appreciated.
The cars been running the same since the engine light came on, so no change in performance. Light sometimes goes out or flashes or stays constant. Def doesn't rev like you say it should so something to be getting fixed.

Surprised to hear it's got 8 plugs, but I guess the clue is in the name!! lol

Just to update you, it's a goal for you!! Hooked the car up to my friends OBD2 scanner and it's reporting a misfire on cylinders 1 & 4. So I'll change all the plugs and the coil packs. Might as well do them all for the price.

Oil usage is probably to do with some residue around the area underneath cylinder no'1. Maybe a leaky gaskett or something??

Thanks again. Let you know how it goes after the repair.
