Engine cooling fan not working

My engine fan has decided to stop working... I’ve cleaned all the connectors, replaced the resistor with a spare, checked the fuse and swapped the relay but still nothing. Diagnostics say the fan is active once the temp hits 98 degrees but the fan doesn’t start. Any suggestions?

As Lech mention you need to debug the issue.
If you measure the voltage at the red wire on the fan, do you then measure 12V?
And as Lech says try to connected the brown wire to ground (Chassis)
If fan and wiring are functional the fan should spin

Nelly, does it come on at second threshold? ( I think it’s 103c ) I’d let it heat up to that temp monitor via the OBD port if it does come on then bypass the resistor ( brown wire ) , your fan should come at 98 but at full speed, if it doesn’t that narrows down the fault to the wire to the Resistor in the fan shroud.

you could also disconnect the engine temp sensor as the fan will come on as a default to protect the engine in the event there’s open circuit on the temp sensor ...

if it doesn’t then that would suggest a short somewhere between the ecu and the fan itself, as the ecu thinks it’s running .

I assume you tested the fan by connecting directly to a battery ?

good luck ...👍🏻

Many thanks for the replies. I disconnected the temp sensor and the fan didn’t come on although diagnostics said it was active. I’ll borrow a multimeter from work and check the voltages and try a battery on the fan etc. I’m guessing when the fan should be on I should get 12v on the plug for the fan. Is there any way to test the resistor?

Thanks again for all the replies... I shorted out the resistor and the fans kicked in immediately so at least I know what’s wrong. Do I get a used one for a couple of quid or splash out £50 on a new one?

Just in case I need to buy a new one; does anyone know the part number for the one I need? The one I took out is definitely the origInal one and it’s brown in colour. According to Alfa Workshop, I need this one and it’s brown and 0.23 ohm;

But when I e-mailed Partsworld with my chassis no to check, they said I need this one which is black and 0.18 ohm.

Both republican reputable Alfa specialists so who is right? Thanks

Many thanks... mine has aircon (not that it works but I’ll get it sorted at some point if other bits of the car stop breaking).

Just had a little play about and the fan seems to be working fine after cleaning up the connections to the resistor. I’ll keep an eye on it but hopefully all sorted now.
Thanks again for all the advice.
