Hi,

Had my 2.0 JTS Alfa for 6 months now, always check the oil and its topped up when needed.

Recently there has been a pretty serious sounding metal on metal banging noise that starts about 2500 rpm. I have had a proper listen to the top and bottom end of the engine and the noise is definitely coming from the top end. Needless to say i have stopped driving the car and already missing it!

With that in mind i had the cam cover off today and the cam lobes are definitely warn, the lobe near the variator is about 5mm different is size and almost looks squared off at the end. The valve buckets also show signs of damage so there is definitely contact happening there and im sure i need to replace the cams. This strikes me as a lack of oil sometime in the past, my concern though is that this is not the cause of the noise as i am confused as to why it has only just started now.

Any thoughts? Not sure what else to check before i start buying and changing expensive parts!

Cheers

Marc

Alfa should have known better, the 2.0 JTS engine is spec'd for 10W60, however that wouldn't have solved your cam wear problem, if anything the thicker oil makes them worse. There's so many better oils out there than Selenia these days. I would put an engine flush in, run it up to temperature, drop the oil, change the cams & cambelt, and then re-fill with a good 10W40 and change it again after 500 miles, then fill up with your oil of choice. That should get all the crap out of your engine, and then hopefully solve the cam wear problem for good.

If you're after a good second hand pair of cams give me a call 01582 869 560
