Hi all

I have a 2008 2.2jts Spider 58k FDSH, couple of days ago whilst sat in traffic, the engine gave a bit of a cough and the Check engine warning message came on followed by the engine light. Didn't go into to limp mode. Drove to destination ( a couple of miles) switched it off, back on message still there. Started up 4 hours later revs went up to 2k then settled back to normal, drove home no problems light still on. Rang garage booked it in, for next day, no lamp no message, drove spot on to garage, they hooked up to poorly sick machine, no fault stored. (Which I find difficult to believe)

So, questions are, any suggestions regarding the above, and secondly, What fault scanner do people recommend for reading and clearing codes?

When the light burns it stores a fault code that can be read out, and the MIL light needs a reset.
Alfa specialist can do it and the dealers, and you can do it yourself with a laptop/multiecuscan and a ELM327 kabel.

Thanks for the reply, the trouble is the next day there was no light and no fault recorded.

Take it to a garage that has a machine that isn't ''poorly sick''.
When the timing chain starts to 'stretch' the EML will go on and off sporadically.
Code P0016 will confirm if it's that. It might not be.

you can get yourself a bluetooth reader for £10 and diagnose yourself

an engine light is only something to be concerned about if it flashes whilst driving
