Ok ppl
My Alfa 147 went into a local garage yesterday for an MOT,
It went no problems at all through the mot which is good.
But i didnt think to bring the bottle off selenia 20k i have in the garage down so they ended up filling it will valveline 5w-40.
It didnt bother me that much really but after having a quick look in the owners handbook yesterday it tells me that 10w-40 should be used in the petrol engines and 5w-40 in the diesels.
It does say on the bottle of oil they gave me that it is for use with petrol or diesel engines but as the oil grade dosnt match that quoted in the book will it make a diffrence at all??
It could just be me but im sure the car felt slightly slower when i took it out last night???

Help please
Thanks

Did they replace the oil or just top it up ... a top up with 5W40 should be OK.

I had Agip 5w 40 in my 156 for a year and it was fine. Lyles in Newcastle put it all the Alfas they service as far as I am aware.

The oil was replaced.
So 5w-40 should work just fine you think?

The oil is fine. There is no disadvantage in a lower cold state viscosity figure (the 5). Generally there are advantages in a low cold figure because the oil gets to the upper parts of the engine quickly when cold starting.

Once hot, the oil will act the same as a 10 - 40. People like 10 - 60 because of the high hot state viscosity, which may give better compression in a hot engine, less oil consumption, other reasons... but the only reason why the low figure is 10 is because no one can make an oil with a range from 0 - 60, although this would in some ways be a theoretically ideal oil.

I use Mobil or Castrol 0 - 40.

The 5 - 40 is fine.
