I am changing or reconditioning my ABS pump but my Alfa Specialist and the ABS guy hes called the "ABS Doctor" have different views on changing brake fluid when changing the ABS Pump.

My Alfa Specialist insists the brake fluid needs to be changed when changing the ABS Pump.

But the ABS Doctor insists you dont have to do that. All your doing is changing the Pump and its got nothing to do with changing the fluid.

So who is right ??

Ultimately, the bleeding process will change all the fluid anyway. Unless 'ABS Doctor' reckons the pump can be changed without bleeding the whole system.

I'd have thought that a recon ABS pump would be pre filled with fluid, but disconnecting the 6 rigid pipes would introduce air into the system that would require bleeding.

You can change the electronics part and the electric pump motor of the ABS unit without disturbing the hydraulic circuit.
Oh really ? Ok

What I want to do is get my Alfa Specialist to take the ABS Pump off the car then the ABS Pump will be couriered to the ABS Doctor who will just repair the ABS Pump and give it back to the courier who will put it back on my car. This would involve bleeding the brakes. About $500-$600 USD

The other way was the ABS Doctor would take out the ABS Pump himself and repair then put it back himself Without bleeding the brakes. (This would obviously be cheaper) about $475 USD

So not sure what the best thing to do is

I presume the ABS doctor just wants the electronic ECU part of the ABS module as this is the part that can give problems and is repairable. It can be separated from the main block without disturbing the hydraulic system. There is also an electric pump motor that can be changed. The main hydraulic block is not repairable as far as I am aware. So depends on what is wrong with your system.

I think its the part that is repairable. Also its showing the brake light symbol on my dashboard and my Alfa Specialist said its the ABS Pump that is broken and needs replacement. I know that is very general but Does that sound right ?
