Do you bite when you get someone wanting a race?

Over the last couple of days I have encountered a few people who have made it quite clear they want to have a bit of a race or for me to floor the car alongside them.
Most recently this was a Golf Gti and then an S-Line Audi A4....both pulled alongside me on dual lane stretches of road (one a national speed limit, the other a 40mph limit), and the driver started gesticulating for me to 'go' (with various nods and hand signals) before booting their car and disapearing off down the road.

Now, I don't know if it's just an age thing, but I can't be bothered with this kind of thing anymore? When I was in my twenties, and probably early thirties, I used to engage all the time, but at the grand age of 54 I just don't feel like I have anything I need to prove anymore when it comes to the car I drive? I said to my fiance as the Audi screemed away (sounding like the engine was about to explode it was being revved that hard!), that I know my car could easily beat them and that's enough for me, I don't need to risk points on my licence or, even worse, an accident, just to prove it to some young lads I have never met before....that's what drag strips and track days are for.

It's not just because I know the Quad could quite easily do me proud in those situations either...I am the same in our BMW iX3. That car may be a lardy EV SUV, but at the traffic lights, and in sport mode, it's more than capable of beating quite a few sporty models off the line (soon starts to lose that rapid pace though!), but I just can't be bothered with it anymore?

Once on a nice country road, with loads of fast bends and long straights and in the right conditions, I will open the car up and get the most enjoyment out of driving it, but I'm just not interested in racing people on the road anymore?

Am I in the minority here? Do other Quadrifoglio owners like to show other 'lesser' marques up when they are baited by the drivers?

I know exactly what you mean, whats the point in having a super saloon if you dont use it ?
I must admit on the odd occasion I have taken the bait when the wife is not in the car. It's nice to put some of those so called premium brands well and truely in your rear view mirror, its over so quickly depending on the road you can still be legal. ( Not currently in these weather conditions and P Zero Corsas)
Childish maybe, worth it, absolutely.
I must also say that when I do pull up at the lights in Lane 1, if anyone does pull up along side in Lane 2 usually they hang back.😉

I'm quite happy with what's between my legs. It does the job* without me having to wave it about.
I don't hang about when driving but I do stick to limits as I don't want the hassle of points/ naughty boy training courses. Saying that, I don't drive anything that would put me in the position of someone wanting to race though!

* Mrs Harvo might have something to say about that.....

I never take the bait, I don’t even look. I find it hilarious how many lower performance cars’ drivers want to.

Audi drivers around here are the worst. On our local interstate city beltway I’ll do 77 in a 70 and all the Audi and other morons have to show me they can drive 85 🙄

a G80 M3 in a disgusting red/rust metallic just had to pass me and show his ass with a “G80” license tag ( my God how original ) and all I noticed was how ugly his car is.

i think a large number of people have no clue what an Alfa Romeo or especially a Giulia QV is or what an Alboreto licence tag means.

I did a touring trip in my 4C of almost 1,800km a few weeks ago. A few drivers upped their pace to keep me behind. The trick is to accelerate past them so fast that they are simply demoralised. Worked every time. You then slow down and you’re free to carry on at your own pace without being harassed.
In the city/suburbs I just laugh and let ‘em go.

A few years back... I had a mate with a rep spec looking early noughties Audi A3 quattro de-badged "sleeper" that he spent all his money modifying... I know that it ran high 400's whp ... he would bait the local supercar owners as his pastime, he was younger than me I hasten to add !!! . I once had a pop at him on a local bypass in an F10 M5 and followed him up the on ramp in full sport mode, rather embarrassingly it had no problem at all pulling away form my car .... it was a bland looking little Audi but it was terrifyingly fast

I'll admit to partaking in the occasional traffic light grand prix in my younger days (teens & twenties) when owning performance cars.
It'd just be embarrassing to do it now - I've grown up - though I don't drive a 'performance' car, 'just' a stunning Italian roadster. I'd rather have something that looks miles better than most things on the road than something that's just fast.

The only time I have had a proper play in the car was, as you say, when my other half was not with me....I was on my way to The Motorist Coffee & Cars meet the other Month and there was a guy in a DB11, obviously on his way there as well, on the M1. He hung back for me to catch up then gave me a bit of a wave to go and we both floored it. When I looked at the speedo and saw I was doing 117 within a few seconds I quickly dropped back and let him go. Did have a big grin on my face knowing that I had kept up with him though.

Mine had Goodyear Eagle F1's on but I have swapped them out for Michelin Alpin 4S's for the winter...no idea how good the car is in this weather with those tyres when pushing it though as not driven it with any anger since having them fitted?

Completely agree with that. I already pay enough for my insurance so don't want points bumping it up anymore!

Do young people still eat Polos ?
I used to love those fruit flavoured Polo's...are they still a thing?:p
Have to say that most of the 'yoooths' around here drive much nicer cars than Polo's though. In fact, the bare minimum seems to be the likes of new, or nearly new, Golf GTI's, BMW M135i's or AMG A35's. A lot though seem to be in Golf R's, AMG C63's, BMW M3/4's or Audi RS6's.....we also get a LOT of daily rental supercars being driven by very young looking lads almost every weekend!

It is nice, even with all that around, that the Quad seems to get a lot of admiring nods and looks from other drivers though...think it's because it's a rarer sight than all the others.

I think you are right, a lot of people still have no idea what a Giulia QV is and so they don't recognise it....and most of the ones that do seem to be people who have an appreciation of cars, rather than just wanting a race.

Nope, but that is mostly down to my mito being waaaaaaaaaaay too slow for that

If i was in a Giulia QV and some yob with a golf GTI wanted a go.... I absolutely would, although even then i'd be on my toes for hints of heavy mods.

I was half expecting the A4 the other night to have a big exhaust and loads of power...but it was definitely standard ;)

Nope. My MiTo sounds fast but it isn't, it's a cruiser

Also, I know several 5-0 and a lot of them are now using unmarked high end cars and are out and about in the local hotspots looking for this sort of thing.
I work for the local Force (Prepares myself for the hail of insults ;)) but am not a cop....I do work closely with a lot of the specialist teams though so know what is out there, and that's partly another reason why I don't push it on the roads around here.....that and the embarrassment and repercussions I would face if I was pulled and done for speeding/dangerous driving.

I don’t bother as most Audi or BMW drivers looking for a draggy will be in an AWD/Xdrive, I’m not risking embarrassment in a RWD 500bhp saloon on a damp UK road against any kid in an all wheel drive car. I know I’m soft for not racing but I’ll leave that to karting or track days.

Same ******** today

Was in my ~ 290 hp 993 (272 from factory , cat replaced (and saved) and Xpipe instead, minor tuned chip.
Some bozo in what I believe was a heavily modified Nissan GTR, based on the appearance and the way he was revving his loud exhaust.
I took two scared shitless laps around the Nurburgring with a RSR Nurburg taxi hot shoe in a GTR, followed by my own Sunday driver lap in a brand new 200 miles on the clock Macan and there’s no way in hell I was even gonna look at this guy in a GTR. Rice boy supreme

When I was a whippersnapper motorcyclist, I learnt a nice trick from an older biker, on how to deal with these arseholes. At the lights, make eye contact, increase revs and make sure they bite. Check that its clear L and R, and on the green light jump forward about one foot only, then revert to a normal slow pull away. With any luck, Mr Knobhead will be long gone, on his own, caning it and hopefully either getting pulled, getting into a fix in the traffic ahead or just realising he's been duped. Its lovely stuff.
There are variations available but all these involve collisions and damage. Much safer in a car.
