I have a phase one 97 Spider 2.0. Ive wanted to de-cat my car for ages but im short on funds for a de-cat pipe. A good friend of mine of mine works for Benz and said i could take cat off the car and use a metal bar and smash it out making sure ive removed all the particles.... is this true?? will i notice and differance in noise or performance?? will it mess the ECU up?? Im off tommorow so might try it but wanted to check before i went ahead with the deed

You'll need a cat to pass the mot and I'm sure someone else here said they did this and it sounded terrible. Proper decat pipes are cheap as chips..

I wouldnt do this to your cat. I did this on my 156 V6 and didnt like the sound and once its done you cant go back, I ended up buying a sport cat instead.

As said you will need one for an MOT so it doesnt make sense to trash the one you have.

I would look out for a de-cat pipe, I'm sure there was one on ebay recently which went very cheap.
