Hey guys,

Have erratic temperature on my 156 ts for the last few months. Have replaced pretty much the entire cooling system.

Did a sniff test today and it seems the head needs replacing. That's fine. I'll be glad to get the car running great again!

Here's the question:

I don't need the waterpump/variator/etc done because they've all been done recently.

So He's charging me 500 Euro for:
Headgasket & skimming
But he says he'll also do exhaust/inlet/rocket-cover gasket and do all the valves, which he says is a much better job.

Also, He said he'd charge 160 to do the timing belt & tensioners.

He's a very sound guy and seems to know his alfas inside-out. Just looking for a second opinion on pricing and what really needs doing!

The inlet gasket can leak oil from the variator oil way, so that's ok.

Exhaust gasket will need done if he chooses to remove the manifold, which improves access.

Doing the valve stem seals adds a fair bit of time and complexity to the job, but it will stop it burning oil later in life, and you'll have improved valve seating. The place that skims my heads ask for the valves to be removed. The heads I've had done had been skimmed before, and the valves sat proud of the bottom face of the head.

Rocker cover gasket is usually changed, and is a 10-second job anyway.

I guess he's bought a head gasket set, and is wanting to use all the gaskets that come with it :lol:

Is he changing the timing belt? Even if it's just been done, it should be replaced and not reused...
