Bit general this, but it's for my GTV, so here goes.
Does anyone know of/can anyone reccommend a diagnostic tool/software that is suitable for home use?
I am aware of several products on good ole e-bay, but was hoping to poach someone's experience .... or if you live in Lincolnshire, hoping to scrounge a go on yours....

a 98 GTV huh, P1 I assume? Only unidiag will connect with that ECU iirc with an OBD not OBD II connector, although I think you can get ODB II to OBD converters? That's just a rumour though.

Sorry, unidiag is the software to connect to your ecu. Odb and orb II are the types of port to connect the laptop to the ecu. Odb is the older type.

Appreciate the help! Currently pootling around the net on my phone: so thread searches are a bit beyond me at the mo: your info gives me a decent headstart and a good reference point too. From what I have found out so far.... unidiag is shareware via a yahoo group and I maybe able to buy a observed connector through a fellow alfisti on here?
