Hello fellow Afisti.... just an update on my STILL SICK GTV!!!!.....It was finally picked up from my house 9 days ago ( they didnt have a towing eye at first..). 9 days later, nothing has happened, i am sick and tired of it. The garage invited me to come down last Sat morning to have a look at the head which had been taken off...NOTHING WRONG WITH IT.....the head gasket had NOT failed!, however, the 1st piston on the right had virtually broken up!!!, due to ( we guess??? ) extreme heat??....the radiator was falling apart and wasnt cooling the car, now i am in a real sticky situation. The garage offered to repair it (IF the guy from Alfa breakers advised him it could be done...), i cant afford a re-con engine at over £1000, i need a new radiator ( £150? ), a new head gasket set and a new piston, he also needs to re-ring all 4 pistons ). The problem i have is that no info is being passed to me about the repair and im getting very miffed about it all, I WANT MY CAR BACK!, please could anybody out there tell me IF i can buy a piston, fit new rings etc.... put a new radiator in, fix it up together and hey presto???...because i am tempted to take my car back after 2 weeks off the road and do it myself or pay someone else who really wants to do it and loves Alfas!!. Yeah im angry and confused!!!.

Sorry to hear about your car in such a state. Any garage can do fitting but for refurbing an engine like this I would get it to a specialist. I'm sure you can find some places for parts and refurb by searching around the net.

I would imagine that it is going to be a similar cost doing a full refurb as to buy and install a refurb engine. By the time that you factor in labour, piston, rings, rad, refit, cambelt, tensioners etc etc... Sorry to hear of your problems - I hope you can afford to get it back ASAP.

Hey bigmanchips....just got my GTV back tonight after 7 weeks off the road!, had cylinder re-bored, new piston, rings, rad, cambelt, battery ( the one i got "new" with the car was from "barbie & kens jeep" !! ), all put back together and quiet as a mouse....im taking it for a run later just to warm him up. Only trouble is.....i dont have the code for the bloody cd/radio ( original gtv one )...any ideas??. Cost will be telephoned by the gargae tomorrow...looks like i'll spend xmas selling the big issue...cheers chris

Good to hear it's fixed, don't know why the mender should have made a fuss about it but I can understand something of a bill. Watch your temperature gauge!! (and watch out more if it doesn't work properly)

Weather not so bad in the grey midlands but there was a flurry first thing this morning.
Hope the petrol wasn't to pour over it/yourself.

Ouch:eek: - but TBH for the work you've had done, not too bad, I guess. Surprised the garage let you take it away before payment - you're obviously very trustworthy:lol:

I'm based in Waterfoot so if you've any other issues give me a call and I'll try to help. Been off work after surgery recently so only just seen your post or I'd have tried to help earlier. The garage did fit new belts and tensioners as part of the rebuild, didn't they?

Actually, £800 is not sounding too bad at all. I think you got a billy bargain there. Seeing as it's totally possible to pay £400 just to have the belts done that is a pretty reasonable price. I think you have a good mechanic there - just I wish you better luck for the future!

Im just around the corner from the garage, besides, theyve had it 7 weeks which has been hell.....nothing like being a prisoner in the Rossendale Valley haha!!. Thankyou for that, its nice to know there are some great people on here offering help it's really surprised me!.
Hope you're on the way to full recovery!, and they sorted the new belts out at the same time ( even though it had a new cambelt about 9 months ago ).

All the best!

Maybe they let you pay in monthly terms.. after 9 weeks of Alfa bisectomy you deserve it !
