Researching a Brera purchase

Very pleased to have found this forum as part of my research into the potential purchase of a petrol, manual Brera. Distilling down the various info on here plus other sources it seems the following are my options:

Mostly a choice between two engines 2.2 and 3.2V6, the latter if I want 4WD. Some reports suggest having the V6 lump at the front doesn't help the handling?

The options seems to be:

Standard car post 08 had no sky view or had a blind over

SV = Standard car with sky view sold up to 08

S = Prodrive. Is this fettled by Prodrive or built to their spec in Italy? Does it have sky view??

Italia Independent = The std car but special paint job, wheels, interior + satnav ?? does it have sky view?

There seems to also be a 1.75TBi from 2010 in standard cars and the same in an Italia Independent but maybe the same car?? Bang for buck this looks like a good choice but no doubt there's a catch somewhere.

Would appreciate any clarification the good folk on this forum can help me with the above. Having owned a Prodrive Impreza that would currently be my first choice but the 1.75 looks worth consideration.

Living down in deepest Devon maintenance/repairs would be a concern as I wouldn't want to go near our main dealer and am not aware of any good specialists in reasonable distance. Happy to travel to purchase.

Thanks for your help

Pro-drive was carried out at Portbury docks where a quantity of unsold Breras were retro-fitted with new suspension parts etc as they weren’t shifting , even with big discounts. In Italy they were in a hurry to get hundreds of Breras sold to employees of Fiat and their suppliers before the new Euro emissions regulations made then unsalable. Quite a few had to be scrapped.

Thanks to everyone for the essential info.

I always take interweb advice with a pinch of salt as the bad news is out there for all to read and the good stuff stays quiet.

I am searching for a 159 2.4 in either Lusso or TI as a project and reading this has helped immensely so thanks.

I'm doing it. I'm going to buy a 159. When i find one...

Many thanks to all the contributors to this thread. It's been a real help in both making me want an Alfa, and scaring the bejesus out of me.

My beloved 36 year old Porsche has been my daily driver for 10 years, but now I'm doing 200km a week, and have 3 kids, I need something more "practical" (yes - I know!) I'd rather walk, than drive something mundane, so for 12 months I've been on this forum fixating on a 159. Very specifically, a black Ti model.

My question: Are 2010 models - in particular the 2.0 diesels - worth holding out for, over earlier models with the M32 gearbox? Are there other updates after 2009 that make later cars a better option?

On my budget, the current crop of 159s on sale present a dilemma between very few 2010, 2.0 cars with large mileage (close to 150k) and lower mileage 2009 1.9 models. I've been burned by a gearbox in the past, but also a high-miler that everything just wore out on.

Or is the option not "High Miles v Chocolate Gearbox", but really all about finding a good MOT/service history?
(I do have a long list of other checks thanks to this thread, too).

Worth noting in Ireland there's a tax saving of €180 a year in having the 2.0 engine.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Just a follow on from my post above.... need an answer if one can be had.
I've trawled the forum but can't get definitive info.

I'm currently looking at a 2009 2.0 JTDM 16v TI.

Did all 2.0 JTDMs get a different gearbox than the M32? Or were some early ones still fitted with it?

I've asked the dealer to check the car for me but he's gone off the grid and i'm not sure I can trust him to find any info. It's a bit of a dealbreaker for me, and I may need to move quickly.

Thanks!

No 2.0 JTDm got the M32....most got the F40 (tough but not the smoothest) and the last few got the C635....(not a lot stronger than the M32 (350nm max against 320nm) but lots more reliable)....although it is starting to show similar issues to the M32....but nowhere near as common.
