I've managed to convince iTunes in the US
that I'm an American.

You can legally download episodes of TV shows.

Considering ditching Sky. Hopefully
Murdoch's empire will soon be flushed away
by newer technology.

And we'll get this for real in Europe soon.
(The Beeb has their iMP trialling, but all the
UK channels are IP blocking. :( )

Yes Nev, the iplayer. Tell us more about the blocking?

With US iTunes you just to have a credit card with a US address.
They don't check where you are once you've got a working account.
:)

But the UK TV stations like BBC, Channel4 and LivingTV look at your
IP address, so if they see you're physcially outside of the UK they don't
allow you to see/download content. :(

Interesting, but nah: to mac specific.

We'll just end up with someone else (Apple)
controlling the platform/portal.

What we need is a cross OS player that
will run on a variety of machines/boxes/devices
combined with bittorrent content distribution.

I have a dream.....

And if you think about it, content providers would
love this, as they could sell boxing matches, football
matches etc. for a few bucks each and bring in huge
revenues to to the much larger volumes they'll shift.

Edit:
BBC iMP Clicky

Damn, iMP is Micro$oft Windoze based!!! :(

The only reason I got SKY was to get a half decent picture, as the reception (on TV and radio) in this area is awful and there was a dish attached to the house when I bought it.

Hmm, I don't see why the BBC are doing this. Maybe to do with artists' contracts and 'repeat fees' etc? Maybe there is some negotiating to be done with Equity?

You must be near Crystal Palace, are you sure your gear isn't just being overloaded and that you don't just need a simple attenuator? If you're getting 'ghosting' or reflections, these normally don't affect Freeview at all.
And anyway, if you're not interested in loads of extra channels, you can get Freesat, a card for a one-off payment of £25 that will give you all the Freeview channels for free on satellite.

It's because media companies (and sports bodies) are still living
in the mid 20th century.

They even turn off Radio 5 from the internet during the world cup
and Olympics 'cause the Beeb hasn't paid FIFA or IOC
for worldwide broadcast rights.

Same for films, US TV shows etc. It's all based on geography,
even though we are living in the 21st century internet era.

Are you paying a monthly subscription to Sky, Zoso? If you only want the basic digital channels, you don't have to! And if you want the convenience of the Sky+ box, you can buy exactly the same type of device outright, with no subscription, to work with Freeview.

You don't even need a Skybox for Beeb Channels
and ITV2/3/4.

Just any old sub 60quid DVB Sat receiver will do.
