Some useful info on IBS, correct way to charge the battery via the IBS and the conditions that need to be met for SS to work.

FFS! Have just read the above PDF (or tried to) and I swear you guys must get turned on by all this stuff. I thought jwq had explained the practical requirements pretty well for my needs so please stop sowing the seeds of doubt, fertilized by my own ignorance, in my mind. :(

Referring to my ignorance, can anyone tell me what type and size of battery I should have in my 2018 Veloce? I can find no reference to it in the handbook and I cannot physically check on the battery without removing the connections which fear, after reading numerous posts on such issues, is preventing me from doing.

On the basis of likes @metalgod23's post got you might be in the minority.

I believe all petrol Giulia's in UK have 80Ah EFB batteries. Though, I'll upgrade to AGM if I ever need a new battery.

Enter your reg number in the Halfords or other website and it will answer your question.

I know Andy, my remarks were made in a lighthearted, flippant vein.

I was hoping it was more as the CTEK I have been using for the last two years is rated 3.8 and now gets very warm when in use. I had wondered if the battery was too big for it to cope with but it is rated up to 85 ah. Also works fine on my wife's Evoque. So there is something not right somewhere.

Have tried that but it comes up as "no selection available".

There are 2 types of standard battery (and alternator) : an 80 Ah version and a 95 Ah version. The 95 Ah is part of the cold weather package, not standard in UK so you will probably have the 80 Ah
Standard Alfa is EFB type battery, but if you need to replace you're better of with 95 Ah AGM
see attachment and:
Varta AGM

Using the standard Varta "search", you get the following:

I considered getting the 95 ah version but it’s 38mm longer than the 80 ah battery and having changed my battery recently for the 80 ah version, I’m not sure the 95 ah one will even fit without modifying the compartment in which it sits. There is a little room in there but once the battery is properly seated, the extra length would mean the battery covers the hole into which the securing bracket screws. I could be wrong and the compartment may be configured differently for different markets but I don’t think I could have made the larger battery fit.

;) the attachment I posted is pretty much the same as the info Jwq posted. The pictures and the explanation I thought gave some good context.

Don't think we need the 95Ah AGM version in a standard Giulia. The 80Ah AGM battery sounds like the best upgrade for fitment going by Dave's experience. The Quadrifoglio has a 95Ah battery as standard and to my eyes the fitting location looks the same so a 95Ah EFB battery might fit in a standard Giulia perhaps?

I proposed the 95 Ah AGM as Varta only has an 95 Ah version, no 80 Ah.
Also as 95 Ah is standard in the cold weather package on the giulia, it will fit and with all the battery problems, it never hurts to have a little extra reserve ;)

Rem: Varta apparently DO also have an 80 Ah AGM battery, was a bit hard to find ;) :

... The Quadrifoglio has a 95Ah battery as standard ..
Are you sure?
When I could last connect to ePER, it told me that right battery for my early 2017 Quadrifoglio was 80Ah.

As 95Ah is standard for Giulia's in cold countries, I'd be surprised if a 95Ah wouldn't fit in a UK one.

There were 80Ah and 95Ah used in Giulia/Stelvio. 95AH for cold markets, 80 for non-cold and as far as I know on Stelvios they tried to used 80 for cold markets but quickly changed their minds. This is compilation of information I got from other users and from my dealer service guy.

You are right. I misread and remembered incorrectly from the tech manual. Standard for all models is 80 Ah/600 A cca or Cold Countries 95 Ah/800 A cca.

see post #110 .....
So... I seen your post, confimed it and added : "Stelvios they tried to use 80 for cold markets but quickly changed their minds " - this is based on information I got from serviceman in dealership - he advised me that on early production for Poland (cold market) there were stelvios with 80Ah for some reason (maybe stock issues of bigger batteries?). No matter what size of battery we put, with lacks in charging each will be degrading and never fully charged.

Absolutely agree. Except perhaps in really cold climates, an 80Ah battery whether EFB or AGM, should be sufficient for a petrol Giulia or Stelvio. I am certain the story that early models' batteries were sub-standard was nonsense. All the problems owners have been having are down to the charging 'logic' AR adopted to make it appear their cars were greener.
