Hi all my local mecahnic just told me the bushes on the crossmember have collappsed, do i need a whole new member or can the bushes be replaced? and is it a big job

Are you talking about the bushes that support the rad in the bottom cross member?
If so they are easy to get to, get underneath the car remove 4 bolts and the cross member will come loose, you will see the bushes from there.

Or main front crossmember with the suspension arms? If so, you can replace just the suspension arms each side.

Difficulty : Fairly fiddly but not too difficult.
