hi there, I recently bought a 2.0 147 on a 05 plate, when I was checking it over I found that inside the water was a cream substance around the inside of the lid and a couple of small lumps of it floating in the water, the water was clear and the fan is working so no overheating, I've had the car a couple of weeks now and there seems to be a bit more of the creamy substance which is now clouding the water, is this something I should be concerned about or is it nothing?

Creamy substance, like mayonnaise?, is likely to be oil. The question is where has it come from. My ts had a suspected head gasket fail when it was less than 2 years old. Water was full of oil. Useless main dealer got that wrong, was the oil cooler.

Anyway, bottom line is 10 years later and there was evidence of oil in the water in small quantities.

So if it gets progressively worse you may have a problem. With any luck it may just be remnants of an issue that has bees solved.

Water clear? As in just water and no coolant mixture, which would suggest its a known problem by previous owner.

all sorted, went to a local alfa specialist, he done water test and determined that I have not got a head gasket problem, he suggested I clean out water bottle and keep an eye on it

It may have had the oil/coolant heat exchanger fail.
That puts oil in the coolant and it can still be appearing after changing the coolant.

So yes, keep an eye on it.

Are you loosing any oil?

I have come to realise that I am slightly losing oil but there doesn't seem to be anymore mayo in the water bottle, could it be the oil/coolant heat exchanger problem mentioned earlier?

Could just be burning oil or just using it. You do need to keep an eye on the oil levels check it regularly. How much are you losing?

I totally hopeless when it comes to cars but I didn't think cars used oil, I just thought it circulated, I don't think its burning oil, no coloured smoke or any smoke at all out the exhaust

Sit in the drivers seat up to your right there is a sticker that tells you why you need to check your oil regularly as it was designed to use oil. Can't remember the exact wording. Alot of twinsparks burn oil with no smoke myine is good and doesn't burn any.
