My 2021 Giulietta Veloce final edition somehow has a large crack in the exhaust pipe! How could this have happened?

Stranger still, I believe the crack was there from when the car was new as there has been no change in exhaust noise. The car has also always smelled of exhaust in startup (which I assumed was normal and just turned recirculate on). I also noticed heat coming from under the car after driving but never connected the dots.

Perhaps a question for the dealer before the Warranty runs out.

A tear in that position would suggest a tension force only on the underside. That would suggest either the outer end of the system has been forced upwards or the centre pulled down. Neither scenario suggests accidental damage unless you have driven on some very rough roads. I imagine that is unlikely given the general condition of the underside which looks immaculate for a two year old car.

Has it been in a bump?

If not, looks like a warranty job to me which they'll no doubt make a meal out of. Or you could just get it repaired, a new bit of stainless pipe the correct diameter welded in place would do it.

It hasn’t hit a bump or been driven on rough roads and the car’s only done 7000ks. The sound of the exhaust hasn’t changed from new so it may have always been there… Pretty strange for such a new car

Clamp too tight or too loose and maybe the silencer not fixed correctly stressing the joint.

sounds like the middle silencer is doing most of the work!

Possibly a transporter driver putting the ratchet straps in the wrong place. We used to have a similar thing on 96 MY Rover 400’s. They would tie the car down and occasionally go across a rear suspension link causing it to bend and throw the rear wheel alignment out.

Its not a crack, thats just some condensation coming out of the clamp on cold starts. Carbon comes out with the water and stains the pipe. Worst case is that clamp is a little loose and 10 seconds crawling under with a spanner will sort it - dont go crazy, its not meant to be super tight.

Without a better picture, I'm not convinced. It does look like a split, almost like there's a decent bit missing.

The “crack” is a slit cut into the pipe that slips over the other one. Standard slip joint.

This looks like a split to me, if it were a fabricated slit it would be a straight cut.



In any case, surely the mid pipe would fit inside the backbox and the slit would be in the backbox spigot.

It’s just carbon staining the mid pipe. It’s dribbling out of the slit on the rear section.

It’s either the clamp bolt is a little loose or maybe the slip joint hasn’t been slipped far enough on. Either is an easy thing to deal with.

Ignore it, mention it the next time it’s serviced and they spend the 30 seconds to deal with it.

You've paid good money for the warranty, so tell them to sort it. If 'haakon' is right, it won't take them long to fix it. Don't forget to tell them about the "dangerous" fumes inside the cabin, causing you to run the recirculate all the time since new.

Im jealous you got a 21 veloce, that doesnt look like a fix to me its a hole split whatever you call it not good.

My money is on a hole/crack, that's what it looks like to me but will see what the OP says after it gets looked at.
