1: Credit crunch/recession

2: Quick sales needed

3: Too many 'sheds'

Below are a couple of quotes from another thread: http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-gtv-and-916-spider/297828-v6s-in-norfolk.html#post4352326

Unless you have to buy locally you will get better for the same price and less. They aren't bad looking cars but in the current market they are pricey.
No wonder prices are low when people on here keep going on about how cheap our cars are?!!

The 1st example is an 2001 3 owner 48,000 miler & the 2nd has a reg no' worth ÂŁ300ish.

I've never bought 01s that cheap & Rednose is saying they're pricey!!!!!

Prosective customers look on here for guidance before buying & a lot of you are helping keep prices low, even driving them lower, with these sort of statements.

Both these examples would break for more money than the sellers are asking.

Whatever happened to 'the whole is equal to the sum of the parts'?...or words similar.

I've just sold a Cup for ÂŁ7500 & a Cup-a-like for ÂŁ5800, plus have taken a deposit for another V6 at ÂŁ3750. I spent a lot preparing them for retail &, although I doubt you'll believe me, there wasn't a lot of 'profit' in any of them(they all should've fetched between ÂŁ500 to ÂŁ1000 more but it's an uphill struggle against the odds). All of them took between 6 months & a year to sell....so to he who can wait.....ÂŁ????

Prices could/should be higher but too many people are in a hurry to sell & throw away remarks like 'they're pricey' when the cars in question represent v.good value doesn't help any of 'us'(& that includes owners on here).

People are regularly saying how much they've spent getting their car up to spec. I've had one member today contact me hoping to part exchange a V6 that he's spent over ÂŁ2k on already, & it still needs a lot of money spending to bring it to what I'd call retail standard, for one of mine which is already prepared. It would've cost him less to buy from me to start with but many of you think my prices are unrealistic. If you enjoy doing the jobs yourself that's one thing but to then ignore the costs involved + labour is frankly madness.

We should also remember that although these cars are slightly impracticle, a bit thirsty & probably a 2nd or 3rd car to many.....they also are superb looking, a good driver's car, the V6's engine is an Italian masterpiece & basically very reliable... all for the price of a basic small family hatchback.

It's not only GTVs that take time to sell. There is a huge amount of competition out there, we should be high lighting the GTV's strong points not complaining about how long they can take to sell, IMO. If you want to turn any car into cash quickly then normally you have to accept a lower price than those who can afford to wait.

I expect a certain amount of disagreement & flak from some of you but please refrain from being too personal....remember I'm trying to raise the GTV's image & hopefully it's value.....which would find it's way into your pockets as well.

The simple fact of the matter is this, Gentlemen:

any item is worth what someone will pay for it.

As Clive has sold a GTV for 7.5K, then that GTV was worth 7.5K to the buyer. Maybe not to anyone else, but to the buyer it was.

Anyone can moan on and say the buyer has paid too much, but in all honesty, this is an opinion, it is not a fact. Clive's car may (I say may as I have not crawled all over it and tickled its cam covers to know!) have been worth 4K more than others because of history, because of work done, because of general all round condition.

Also bear in mind that buying from a dealer brings peace of mind that buying from a private vendor on ebay does not - buy an unroadworthy wreck/ stolen car from a dealer and you have come back. From a private vendor you do not, so unless you happen to be a boxer or karate expert and willing to use your skills you risk being burnt.

Final point on the what something is worth - some of us have higher disposable incomes than others, so forking out 7.5K to one man might not be a big deal where it would to another. If aliens kidnapped my Cup then I would happily fork out in that region for a replacement.

Yes no-one is arguing that but you too are missing the point. Your "buyer" and yourself are not representative of "the market" The market is the mass, and they dictate the average price paid. Any top example will eventually sell for top money, eventually, but even Clive is struggling to make ÂŁ400 after all the time and effort sorting the car, and that is to a buyer prepared to pay above market value.

to cup57, I agree with everything bar the 'dealer piece of mind' thing. See at some point, unless dealers have GTVs that they pass around to each other, a GTV has been owned and sold by a private owner. So the dealer piece of mind is actually a red herring. If you chose to go to a dealer you are paying over the odds simple as that. private sellers sell at a loss dealers 'should' be selling at a profit... so take you pick, me I go private... ( and have, again, GTV V6, pics to follow when collect, but better than the one I sold and cheaper!!! LOVE IT!!!!!!!

As a prviate buyer the current price of GTVs is great but I don't think any of this is limited to the GTV, I think this pervades across all makes and models. My local garage I use for MOTs and the odd bit of repair work said alot of their work is just MOTs and the associated repairs, alot of people have cut back on servicing and preventative maintenance and so it would seem alot of buyers have cut back big time on buying cars from dealers and prviately alike.

Don't tempt fate tigertown, i remember a guy last year who came on here and wanted to swap a 156 for a Spider. I and many others told him he had no hope and he would not even get a shed. I was amazed when he did manage to get an exchange for a Spider and he said his own car was worth ÂŁ900.

I ate humble pie and gave him my congratulations, approx 2 months later he was back on the boards saying he hated Alfa Romeo as he had nothing but problems with the car and wanted shot off it. At that point i did mention Karma to him.

Can I just add for the people on here not reading all the threads. That Clive suggests that AO and it's members are responsible for the drop in GTV prices....... so that how we came to be 10 pages in.

Just think about that before you go gobbing off against people.

EauRouge, I can think of another recent example here of tempting fate.

I mistakenly called someone Clive today.

tigertown I look forward to seeing the pics. of your latest acquisition. :)

A couple of Clarkson quotes from Dave this weekend seem apt.

About the Fiat 500 Twin Air. 'You won't save money, but you'll have fun while not saving money.'

On the 3 forensically examined BMW E30 Cabriolets, 'Not all identical cars are identical.'

I think most cars are 'cheap" at the moment,
Porsche Boxsters can be found on autotrader at the momemt for as little as ÂŁ4k
and i have even been looking at by a 996 for about ÂŁ10k which is just such a good buy !

I love Alfas and have to say they are not Cheap but just good value for money !

The low value of GTVs isn't doing them any favours. In fact its seriously harming the quality of those on the road and meaning more and more get broken. I bought mine cheap, and I'll probably sell it cheap, but I'm doing the bare minimum to keep it on the road because I know I'm not going to get my money back when I sell it on. I'd like to do a bit of paintwork on it, fit new shocks and front arms, get the wheels refurbed all to make it look and drive as good as a GTV V6 deserves to, but I'll not do any of that as its not desperate, and its wasted money as I'm not keeping it long term. It'll just be another cheap one on ebay when I come to get rid of it. In fact I'll probably take off the Wizard exhaust & Alfatune front pipes and put some standard stuff on in its place, they'll be worth good money second hand.

Out of interest does anyone want to buy a Larini stainless steel cat-back exhaust system? I took it off when I fitted the Wizard quad system and its taking up room in my shed now..

I own an example of a "shed" gtv.... it cost me 250 quid and my "living dead" 306 xsi
It runs on a permanent warning light and the air-conditioning consists of an ill-fitting passenger door and the engine-note is slightly distorted by an exhaust that is 90% weld... but I love that car and it still pulls 100 MPH before I disappear in a cloud of "spyhunter" style smoke.... I came into Alfas from scootering and you get almost the dame thing there: from rat-traps through average examples to better than showroom quality: if you think me chugging about in my little crate is affecting "serious" GTVs then how sad.... as an enthusiast, I used to love seeing a rusty old Vespasian held together with bungie-hooks and shipping baskets just as much as a lo influence restored 64 lambretta tv175... if you feel I am affecting profits... I would of course begrudgingly do a swapsie........
