Hi,
Just wanted to double check whether or not I'm experiencing clutch slip, not something I've had in a car before..

When I put my foot down heavily in 3rd+ gears, engine revs bounce up and down quite a bit before car accelerates. I don't get any significant smell or noise.
The rev bouncing seems worse in Dynamic mode, so sadly I've been driving around in Normal for a while now.

I assume it's clutch slip but making sure before I book it in for an eye watering cost, been quoted a bit over £1000 which sounds normal from what I've seen on here.

Cheers.

Is it a manual or TCT?

Assuming you haven't just engaged the clutch and suddenly give full throttle while driving in 3rd and the revs goes up without and change in speed it can only be clutch slip unfortunately.

The price of £1000 isn't too bad, but make sure the dual mass flywheel is done also. If the clutch has been slipping the heat generated can increase the chances of damage.

I was quoted £2100 for clutch and flywheel on ours so in the end I got the spanners out.

Some useful reading here.

I don't believe mine was friction plate wear (classic clutch slip). It did it for a week and a half and then went away for weeks. Came back a second time and then went away again.
In the end I concluded the release bearing was occasionally sticky thus preventing full engagement.
After the second spell of slipping it was fine for ages and I traded it in (for another G) so never actually got into it to be sure.
If it was genuine friction plate wear it would not go away until the clutch was changed.

The £1150 quote included DMF, that was from MVC in Sale who I believe are good with Alfas. I'd assume it's better to go with an Alfa specialist rather than a clutch specialist.

It's on around 63K miles, revs can jump up about 1000rpm or so then come back down, bit less of a bounce second time then it starts feeling like it catches and car accelerates. Tried it in Dynamic again yesterday and noticeably worse.

Unfortunately the issue doesn't seem to have gone away at any point. I think the only reason I've lasted so long without getting it sorted is WFH for over a year!

Also thanks for the link to the other post about clutch slip. Interesting that there are other possible causes, although mine is all the time and higher mileage than others who've had a clutch replaced. I will do a bit more testing to see when it's worse. Also didn't know that high gears, low revs, and foot down are bad for the clutch, every day's a school day..

I did it on mine recently, JTDm 170...DMF 300E, clutch 190E, hydrulic bearing 60E...so 550 Euros for parts only, Valeo (OEM installed also). 1.9 liters of Motul 75w90, around 10 euros for liter.
