My car is with alfa having some work done and they said that the clutch is going and will let me know the price later when i collect it. I find this odd as I bought the car 3 months ago from Alfa and it had a service and the car has only covered 1000miles since i bought it.

Surely when the service was done 1000miles ago the clutch must have had signs that it was going? During that service it should have been changed shouldnt it? The car has only done 37k miles too.

Have they told you what it is thats 'going' about it? I take it you havent noticed any signs that the clutch is worn? is it slipping or needing excessive revs to keep the car going? It's usually you that tells the garage there's a clutch problem not the other way round. If it were me i'd be off to an independent specialist for a second opinion.

they said the clutch is going which he felt when driving it round the alfa garage but i can get moving in 1st using 900-1000 revs. i thought the clutch was fine, but im not really sure of symptoms.

just briefly cheaked the price of a gen alfa clutch ofr a spider 3.0 V6 and it is £179.88inc vat but without vehicle details i cant get a exact price. (just in case they are fibbing and trying to get more money)

Have you taken it to a alfa garage?

it was at an alfa garage having some warranty work. they said the part is about £400 plus fitting taking it to £950 or something. i wouldnt take it to alfa cos i know they would over charge but thats a lot!

well my knowledge of warranties is limited to the one i have for my wife's car and the way that works is the garage gives you a quote, you clear it with the warranty company, the garage do the work and the warranty company pay the garage. ive also had ones before where you pay the garage then claim it back from the warranty company.

i have an alfa 12 month warranty on the car and alfa told me as its a wear and tear item it probably wont be covered, so can only go on the recent alfa service that was done when i bought the car

Oh right, I was thinking it was a third party warranty. I think your best bet here is to get a second opinion from an independent specialist because if they say the clutch is still good for 'X' amount of miles it'll all become a non-issue and if they do find there's something up with it you'll no doubt get a much better quote for having it done.

true, ill find an alfa specialist near me and if its going, ill tell alfa where i bought it and query why they didnt change it and see if they can do it for free, long shot but see what happens

what age is your car. if its 99 or later chances are that its a dual mass flywheel and if so its 99% rec that you renew that along with the clutch adding about £750 to the bill but a main dealer would prob be £200-300 more. if its not slipping when driving or shuddering badly then leave it for now. the tell tale sign is a heavy clutch pedal, then slipping and shuddering.

nearly def. dual mass then. if it feels heavy and a bit off a strain to operate then its on the later half of life, but you'll know when its really going to go as it will shudder when depressing and releasing and if the friction plate is worn its will start to slip a bit when you floor it.

if your not covered by warranty and you do need to replace, there are a few threads on here giving options, my advice would be a well used one, replace the dual mass flywheel with the solid one from a 3.2 v6 gtv and then the clutch kit for a GTA better setup and 25-30% cheaper.

good luck

On this topic, and not to hijack a thread here, but I'm doing my clutch this weekend. Do I need to change the gearbox oil? If so, how much/what oil?

Thanks!
