I tried to get my 147 out this afternoon but I cannot disengage the clutch to select any gears. :( :( So I'm stuck right now without transport.

I last used the car about a week ago and it was no problem to drive and when I put away in the garage all was OK. Thinking back sometimes it has been slightly temperamental I think when selecting gears but it only happened rarely, when cold probably.

Parked in the garage so trying to select reverse only gets the sound of gears crashing as though the clutch is still engaged. The clutch pedal 'feel' seems normal. Cannot look at it tonight but what basic things do I look for in the morning?

Any ideas would be appreciated before I try contacting a garage.

if a normal manual ( not selesspeed )see if the clutch slave cylinder ,is on top of the gear box and is leaking. if not leaking check that when you press pedal the slave piston pushes clutch arm. if that is working it could be the plate stuck to pressure plate. if not could be the pedal end, check for leaking fluid. If slave is in gearbox check for fluid at bottom of box by lower metal dirt cover. if suspect frozen plate it may separate with a bump start.

is the pedal movable back to the upright position by hand?
possibly the clutch pin thing, fairly quick easy fix if it is :)

After about a quarter hour of fiddling and rocking the car slightly in third gear, I got it working again. It appears to drive OK again, but I only tried it for a short local trip - about six miles. Happy that at least now on Monday I can get in touch with an Alfa specialist to see what might be necessary to fix it. :)

Anyone have an idea why a clutch would stick or freeze in the first place?
