Hi. We recently bought a 2014 guiletta 1.4 petrol progression and we have noticed that it makes a strange noise when driving. It's difficult to describe the exact noise but it's a knocking/clunking/rattling noise that is coming from somewhere. It was more apparent today when accelerating hardish but driving at normal speed it was fine. Not sure if it is the exhaust or gear box or engine. Anyone had a similar experience or can give us any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

How many miles has the car done?

If it has more than 60-70K it could well be the front wishbones. The rear bushes split, and eventually allow metal to metal contact.

It would be worth checking them, especially with the poor quality of the roads.

If you jack up the car at the front you should be able to see if the bushes are split by looking down behind the wheel.

Other potential causes are worn anti roll bar links (tend to make a light knocking noise on uneven surfaces).

Gearbox and diff issues are pretty rare on the G, but not totally unheard of. The higher torque versions such as the Diesels and QV are more likely to suffer.

If you are getting a creak or thump when pulling away it would be worth checking the engine mounts.

Thanks so much for your advice Symon. I think we may have to take it to a local Alfa garage to get it checked over as we havent got the expertise or to a local garage but thinking an Alfa garage would be best??

You are better off taking it to an independent specialist, as they tend to be better (and cheaper)

Where in the UK are you roughly?
