Had a quick search, seems this is a new one.

When I shift into 1st, I can hear and feel a hard metallic "clunk" and the lever comes to a soild, hard stop, with a little notchy feel just as it goes into 1st.

Please tell me that this is not a sign of impending doom!!

From memory this was not there before.

If it does it while moving as in changing down from 2nd to 1st its probably the synchromesh. Mine does it slightly but is fine at a standstill. I just pull away in 2nd if on an incline or come to a stop then change if possible. The gearbox's are pretty bullet proof and should do 150 to 200 k

Check the bolts holding the steering column as the intermediate linkage sits on a pivot on the rack !

Thanks reveds1969. I'll do that. The motor was recently re - fitted by the local Stealership and I've found other fasteners loose so that could be a prime suspect.

Let us know how you get on Mark. Mine clunks just about every change, you just can't hear it over the V6 once you get up to speed. Only noticed it after I changed my clutch slave cylinder.
