As per title, getting a 'metalic' clunking noise when going over some bumps and buckles in the roads.

I have always had the odd noise, but not a metalic type noise.

Anything I should look out for?!

Could be that the wishbone bushes have come loose. Recently had this on mine when it developed a really harsh ride and it was found that the rubber had degraded and had been squeezed out of the wishbone arms and it was running on the metal sleeves!!

Squeek

Wishbone bushes are a prime candidate for making this kind of noise. If it is them, and they deteriorate - you'll notice that squeaking become more regular, and then eventually, over any kind of bump.

Memories of my last 156 are now flooding back. Wishbones replaced every 16,000 miles, or if you prefer, after every other tyre change

That is a bit excessive...!!
At 118000miles my 156 has only had one pair of upper wishbones, every other suspension component (even the droplinks) is original except for new Koni Sport springs & dampers last year.

As for the OP, as robbie1007 said, check the wheel bolts.

nuts

Wise words David.

Yes, my last 156 was somewhat hungry when it came to wishbones, it was only the uppers though, the bottom ones were never replaced, and I sold it at 72,000 miles.

In that time, it had gone through quite a few uppers. The handling would become vague after about 10,000 miles on a set, and then the squeaking would start to drive me insane. I think it was due to me driving 'enthusiastically' on bumpy A roads every day. This would also explain the number of sets of Goodyear Eagle F1's I went through.

Of course, now that I do the same journey in a Brera S, I'll just need to pop into the Osteopath every 10,000 miles instead, which will probably work out at a similar expense. :D

I've just had all my brake discs and pads replaced so nuts could be the issue.
Painting callipers today so will check later ;)

Wishbone is something I'm waiting for (if i can say that). Over 100k now, and I've owned her for about a year so just waiting really for this to happen :(
