Hi

I thought I would post my experience of getting the Climate Control/ Aircon serviced on both my V6 Spiders by Go Cool mobile aircon servicing service (based near Bristol)

2001 Spider

Car had abput 20% gas. previous owner said it was filled 3/4 years ago. The CC blowed cool but not really cold air for about 6/9 months after I bought it.

George, the owner of Go Cool, did a vacuum test and refill, no leaks found in short inspection. Switched on CC, one click, CC worked for a few seconds, from the gauges attached, he showed me that the compressor had switched off. Electrical test passed. Inspection of removed gas/oil showed it to be v black.

He diagnosed a duff compressor with probably damaged Pistons (is that the right word?) He recommended that a new (not recon) compressor be fitted, along with a new drier and condenser rad. He said they would be full of debris from the compressor.

He also said that becsuse the compressor was damaged, a flush of the remaining pipe work with brake pipe flushing fluid would be required (2 hour job!). Anyway this is my "keeper" car, so I agreed to his quote

So onto 2002 Spider

This was completely devoid of gas, so after a failed vacuum test, he filled with nitrogen and uv dye, he found a leak on a pipe union on the condenser. The bolt sheared when he attempted to remove the union!

He suggested that he could remove the sheared bolt & reseat the union to fix the leak, but he had run out of time to fix it there and then.

Not having parts for the 2001 Spider with him, he had to order them

I work away from home, so I booked another Saturday 4 weeks later....

2001 Spider

George removed the old compressor, drier and condenser & he showed me the debris in the system. Black oil and metal swarf. After flushing the system and running the vacuum pump for about 30 mins to remove residual flushing fluid and air, he fitted the new parts, and vacuum tested.

All ok, so he refilled with gas & oil with uv dye. Leak test was ok, so he ran the CC for about 30 mins. Testing temp in air vents. Working as expected. But he did comment that the temp was on the high side at only @18 C. He explained the compressor would probably need some bedding in

2002 Spider

After removing the sheared bolt & reseating the pipe union on the condenser, vacuum test, gas/oil refill, leak test, CC running test. All ok
this time temp was 15/16 C a bit better than than other car, but in his experience from similar age Alfas, "as expected from a not perfect design" (polite version)

Total cost, including testing on 1st visit, was about £120 for the 2002 car and £780 for the 2001 car. That includes a total of 8 hours labour over the two days, on top of the 'testing/ servicing/ regassing/ parts' costs

I am happy
because both cars now blowing cold air, pity they were not fixed for the recent high temps, which included a trip to France for the Classic Le Mans

I would use Go Coopl again, not cheap, but very thorough !!!

PS the ambient temp was 32/34 C in the sun on 2nd visit, so the temps at the air vents inside the cars were not unreasonable

This is why it is best to get your air con serviced each year when the car is serviced. Great George sorted it for you.

I had to take mine off to a company called AVACS which is really close to where I work. Gary the owner had to make me up so new pipes and I forget what other part he also changed. Was around the £600 mark. I have very cold air coming out of mine now. He was also sorting the AC out on an NSX whilst he did mine.

Not sure I value cold air at £600 quid


I do want to get mine sorted though...
I could have made it a lot cheaper by getting the system flushed and then buying recon compressor*, new condenser rad** & new drier*** and fitted myself, then getting a specialist to refill. But time is money to me ;) and I now have a fully warranted system for 1 year!

* About £240 instead of £320

I'm slowly bringing the blue spider up to mint condition, replacing parts with sparking new parts. It's only done 38k miles, and I plan to keep it for a number of years

I would not have spent that sort of money on the yellow daily use spider with 112k miles on the clock
