My 166 has been making a clicking noise for some time from the front left wheel (I think). I only notice it when I drive with the windows open and its been going on for a long time (18 months). It may be my imagination but I'm sure it's getting louder and seems to be worse when I go round corners - any thoughts?

I had a similar problem on my GTA, it turned out the half shaft/ cv joint was knackered. I got an exchange one for about £160 from Alfa

The clicking noise when turning ( only heard when the window is open) and rising in tempo with speed sounds exactly like the problem i had with my drivers side drive shaft. It was more pronounced when turning left and was louder the more lock i applied

I noticed a similar noise on my 166 yesterday, passenger side, (with the windows open), not fast enough to be once every wheel rotation but did vary with speed.
I cured it by closing the windows

My TS had a very bad variator rattle on cold start up that was easily cured by turning up the radio or revving it to 7k

If you are lucky it may just be a wheel alignment issue. Had a similar thing on mine a couple of years ago - it only happended on full lock so I feared it needed a new cv joint. When my alfa specialist had a look though they could not see a problem. Annual wheel alignment solved it and 24 months later it is still fine.

Hi
Most likely are the cv joints on your driveshafts worn out, to verify this driv backwards in circles with max steering, both right and left. Knocking and crunching noises will be heard if shot. Also check rubberdamask over cv joints, if hole, no doubt.

Wheelbearings makes a consistant rumbling noise.

Thanks for all your advice. I think the weights on the calliper solution sound plausible (hopefully!). To clarify, the noise is a gentle clicking (originally I thought it was a stone in the alloy wheels). It's done it as long as I've had the car (2 yrs) but seems to be intimitent - I've done 24k in that time and the cars only done 68k now - so if it was a bearing then would it not have got a lot worse? Of late I've been parking the car in a garage, which requires a lot of tight manouvering, so that might have made things worse. That said, with the windows closed, you'd never know there was a problem. The cars having new front discs at the end of the month so hopefully they can have a look into it then....

Hi Guys, mine does it too. The noise is not loud but it a tick and not a TICK.

The cause.... The Alfa badges inserted into my Al wheels. 2 were loose, pulled them out and put grease around them and that got rid of the problem.

hiya guys, i've got this problem, only noticeable when the windows down and it may be more prevalant on start up but happens after a few miles drive too, it sounds like it's coming from my front right wheel, if i open the bonnet, it doesn't sound like it's engine related... but i'm not an expert, it happens on idle as well as slow rolling speeds and it sounds like a zip from a jacket tapping the body work, that's what it sounds like but coming somewhere behind the wheel... any ideas?

ahhhh, lol, thanks,

i'll give it a few hours before i'll try again and hope that it's fixed by then

i was gonna take a video with sound to show this clicking problem i have too as my descriptions really vague, i was parked up yesterday in the car park and the noise was very little, when i pushed the window button down, the clicking got louder noticeably and more frequent but i'v enot been able to recreate that same scenario i don't think
