right ive had a clonk from n/s front wheel, ever since i changed the front upper, lower wishbones and droplinks, it used to only happen every so often with just a single clunk, now its turning into a regular thing

symptoms:

set of in first gear, the harder you push it ,the clunk, clunk will sound

into second it only happens every now and then

driving the rest of the time is fine

when going over bumpy roads i also get a squeek noise (not the same as upper wishbone squeek) more of a metal squeek

also yesterday i reversed slowly for about 10 metres and there was a click click click

when i replaced the wishbones i didnt support the hub:tut:

so im thinking ive damaged the driveshaft or rack:confused:

all the cv boots look fine and there is no play at all

i also have oil all over the bottom of the gearbox but dont know where thats coming from? is it related?

also had it in a garage over a month ago but couldnt find anything

what do we reckon folks

Have a look at the disc dust cover and make sure its not catching. This can sometimes cause the noise/symptoms you are describing.

anyone else any ideas??
This may sound stupid but double check the tightness of the bolts on your wichbone once a few hundred miles covered, could also be you lower ball joint. I have a new found noise on my 156, when the brake peddle is pressed under braking it clicks but doesn't do it if the car is not in motion, any ideas? It also makes a big clunk under heavy braking, I suspect that is the wishbone moving up against the floorpan even though it is only 9 months old! I have been told by 2 alfa specialists that there was a batch of faulty wishbones made, around 400. it doesn't sound safe although is probably fine. Alfa's are great aren't they. Look forward to response.:D

tbh the noise has only started since i fitted the new suspension parts, that is the exact noise ,it sounds as though the bolts are lose, i used to have to nip them up every couple of weeks and it would cure the noise, i have since put loctite on them and they are now solid.
As for the dodgy wishbones, mine are not alfa originals but some trusted ebay ones which alot of people have used, but it does sound like its failed.

1988Del have you checked to see if your pads are solid and caliper bolts are tight

my mentality at the momment is drive it till it breaks

check the torque of the 4 15mm headed bolts, 35ft/lbs & use loctite on the threads too

thanks mate I'v been out in it today after tightening those bolts and its still there. I now think its the top engine mounting, offside, it clunks under braking hard standstill excelleration and jerky gear changes. Is this common? If so where do i go to get one? Cheers

sorry, I've just been out with someone who had a similar noise on a 145 and he said it is defo the bottom gearbox mount. Is it called this or something else coz no-one seems to know what a bottom engine mount is. Would appreciate response because his broke and ended up with a new gearbox as a result, ouch!!

I was advised to change the top off side engine mount (tie bar / stabiliser) by all things alfa after mentioning it to them whilst they were replacing my osf brake pipe, this got rid of a very similar noise to the one you mention rigsby. Mine had a hell of a lot of side to side and twisty movement compared to some they had on site and compared to my neighbours, could be worth a try? (PS mine alsa had started to kind of vibrate if setting off uphill with a car full and especially if turning at the same time.....now gone)

will try all of your suggestions this weekend

ta very much
thanks guys looks like it is the gearbox mount, its a heavy clunk which goes through the whole car which realistically sounds as though its a suspension part, changing it myself this weekend, I cannot trust anyone around liverpool with my alfa! had one garage which attempted my cam belt and did not attach it too the bottom pulley, hence bottom went ends. anyone know a good garage near liverpool? ta guys

yeah i will, i'm hoping to do it next saturday if thats what it is. The noise initially sounds as though its from from drivers side which is why i thought loose wishbone but having been told its probably the gearbox mount it all comes into play. If yours clunks under a heavy dip of the brake it will sound as though it around your pedals ish. its hard to tell really as its metal on metal and goes through the whole car, but i will send a pic once its off. I have a diagram from the dealer if thats any use?
