flashed for my second speed camera in a week this morning. brilliant.

then on the way home i started hearing a whining, kind of groaning noise coming from the engine when decelerating and at low speeds. not loud but noticeable. i can feel a vibration through the steering wheel. the steering has become increasingly loosey-goosey over the past couple of weeks since i had the car serviced at an independent.

stopped the car and the noise stopped after about 3 minutes.

any ideas? i'm taking it in tomorrow but to be honest the service cost me 450 quid and i could really do without anything major right now.

5 year old 159 lusso 1.9 tdi.

*edit* have looked through some threads here. i checked and there is no red fluid leaking or frothing out of the steering fluid res (which i think is sort of at the middle of the engine near the windscreen, right?)

little black box, red lid, picture of steering wheel on it. Thats the coolant tank you are looking at.

You could be looking at a steering rack issue, you have the tell tale initial signs unfortunately.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago, it turned out to be a faulty power steering reservoir. £32 from mangoletsi in Knutsford and the same again for fitting at my local garage. I would ask the garage to check that first thing.

it's the steering rack. 600quid fitted inc vat. could be worse. i'll post this in the steering problems thread for reference for anyone else.

jesus christ it's expensive having an alfa. i might have to have a rethink about all this. it's a 5 year old diesel reps car and there's always something going wrong with it.
