Hiya.

Gasket came today (2 parter) went to look at removing my alloy top. My Torx sockets wont fit down the deep (narrow) tubes the back Torx bolts are located in. Checking halfords etc they only do socket sets (which also wont fit) or screwdrivers up to T10 (This seems to be T40)

Any ideas where I can get something (pref cheap!) to do the job?

Cheers,
Chris

They're actually Ribe. If you look at the ends of the star, Torx go to sharp points whereas Ribe are squared off.

A lot of people do persuade Torx to work on them though.

IIRC, the tool stall in Milton Keynes market ( never seen them there any day but Saturday though ) have plastic cased sets of hex, Torx & Ribe at about £8 each ( I think ) with a 1/2" socket adaptor.

A bit like these

If you're stuck, I have a set of Ribe .

Bennetts in the town did a set for £11, but they dont hold stock and would take 7-10 days for delivery :( In the end I got a set of Torx 'allen' keys from halfords for £12 and they worked a treat.

Just gotta get it all back together again now :)

Ok all done, run up to temp and out for a burn, no leaks still :)

It says in the guide to check your cams.. I've no idea what to check so I took a pic, any opinions?

They seem to be quite black/manky but look ok to me!

Off my flickr stream as you get a bigger image :) (View all sizes on the top right and see it REALLY big).

Did you put some instant gasket on the corners front and back next to the cam pulleys?
common for it leak especially with a new gasket, unless you have the guts to tighten the cover down to the point just before it cracks.

Sorry, really don't agree with this. Most of the damage caused to alloy tops is because people are using the old gasket. A new gasket seals very easily and very well without over tightening. Not saying some instant gasket will do any harm, but you don't need it.

The lobes themselves will look quite black. It's the case hardening.
Not often I disagree with you pkr!!

Lobes should be shiney like crank journals, both case hardened. Mine were like new metal (On the tips)

That's interesting. My cam lobes are very dark indeed as in photo 11 here The cam variator which I always took to be part of the case hardening process.

I have to admit I was quite surprised at how dark the metal was when I did my belt change last year ( I was used to shiny parts from my days playing with BMC A series ) and there was absolutely no hint of wear on my cams at all. Maybe a different hardening process?

Maybe is just a perception of "dark" when I looked at the pic here, they look quite shiney but from above, the same cams look dark.

Ignore the crank shaft comment, that is of course induction hardened.
