Hi all,

It's kind of a general question but I'll post it here anyway. I have read somewhere that it can be a good thing to change the engine oil and filter after the first 1000-1500 miles (on a new car).

Since my QV is now approaching 1500 miles, I wonder if I should change the oil and filter.

What do you think?

I wouldn't of thought after just 1000 - 1500 miles, probrably more like 10,000 to 15,000

I would recommend changing it now. I dont personally like the attitude of "Oh it's only due one at 15,000 miles so why bother?," as the first thousand miles of any engine are the most important ones. During the "bedding in" process a lot of wear can take place as the pistons settle due to slight variations in tolerances. If you want to have crap (tiny bits of metal) circulating around your engine for another 14k miles then fair enough, but if you plan on having the car for a while then i would have it changed, for performance and reliability sake. I would recommend a change at 1000 miles and then once every 6-8 months after that depending on the sort of mileage you do.

That's what I have seen somewhere around the web. I had no idea whether this was a professional opinion or just an assumption, but it does seem logical.

I do wonder though why the dealer/the company does not recommend it when you get the car? I mean they cannot make you do it, but they can at least mention it.

I don't know why alfa don't mention it, maybe they are not bothered if the engine goes pop 7 years down the line when they only offer a 3 year warrenty ....so they won't be affected ?
When I bought my other car ( DS3) they told me to change the oil after 1k miles ... But funnily enough the guy told me to get it done at an independant garage because citroen charge a bomb ! Customer service for you :p

Who told you to change the oil after 1,000 miles? Citroen specify the first oil change at 20,000 miles or two years.

Won't do any harm changing early (except for the waste of oil and money), providing you use the correct spec oil.
But realistically you won't gain anything either.

For me the only worry about these long service intervals is that most owners don't bother to check the oil level until it is too late...

So check the oil level, top up if required (with the correct spec oil) and all will be fine.

+1.
Changed the oil @ 2,500 it was black and the filter was full of crud :tut:
The argument that the modern oils stay in grade is flawed , I am sure they do , but the other purpose is to remove debris
As said above crud running round your engine will not give it a long life.
The manufacturers / dealers want to appeal to the lease market , private and business , by " stretching " the oil change they lower the running costs. The engine going pop x years after their lease is finished does not enter the equation

I remember I took my MiTo to the dealer quite a few months ago (for some warranty work) and asked them to change the oil at the same time (car had done about 8,000 miles at the time) and the guy looked at me stupid and had a slight attitude with me, as if to say 'Ugh...why?'.

So after that experience I changed the oil myself (with Selenia oil and correct filter). Like most people, I don't think the same oil should stay in the car until the first service.

The chap who sold the car to me. Like i said, he recommended me to get it changed but not at the citroen dealership as it wouldnt be worth it for the money. As an ex mechanic at citroen, he knew a lot about the DS3 mechanically and cars in general, the DS3 apparently shares suspension parts with the peugeot 1007  However like i have said its not vital to change it so soon if you only plan on keeping it for the short term, car companies tell you that it only needs to be changed at 20k miles so the car looks like its cheap to maintain and run etc.. Afterall would you buy a car if the manufacturer told you that the oil needed to be changed every 6 months?..

The 1007 probably shares suspension parts with the 207, which is a close relative, mechanically, to the DS3, just like the MiTo is related to the Vauxhall Corsa!

I'm happy to service any car to the manufacturer's recommendations; I've had cars which needed 3,000 mile oil changes! Of course, manufacturers do sometimes get it wrong . . . TwinSpark cambelts, for example!

I was just making a point.. for example, someone looking to buying a new car are interested in two cars... both the same price but one only needs an oil change after 2 years and the other twice annually.. At dealership prices (£110 an oil change) , i know which one they would choose.....

What's interesting is Abarth Punto Evo interval for oil change is 9k miles and 6k miles if you tune it, it's the same engine, perhaps an Alfa owner is not expected to drive it as enthusiastically ;)

Personally I did mine early ~5k as it was already quite dirty, plus I had done some trackdays already, it also had quite a smell too it, 3 litres of oil must be having a hard job holding all the combustion waste.
