Carplay / Android Auto install - Ksmart unit

Today I was mostly installing a carplay/android auto unit. This one although mine is not from Veloces ;) . The 'manufacturer' of this box is Ksmart, yet another rebranded/reskinned Limcet box. It has the usual graphical interface like all the others from Eng-custom, Imperium etc, uses the built in microphone, camera, speakers and steering wheel controls, has 5G Wifi and so on.

As you can see below it looks very pretty in Android Auto mode!

This unit was cheap in the Black Friday sales, but now I've got it, I think I will be reselling it. Not because it doesn't work, it works exactly as described, just because I don't think I'm enough of a user of streaming music services and don't hate the inbuilt Tom Tom nav enough, to deal with the irritations of Android Auto. At least with the Alfa Nav you can actually get full screen, you can't with AA (unless some kind person can enlighten me) see screenshot below.

It's also a bit of a PITA to take the unit out every time the car goes to my dealer (these units are allegedly bricked by a proxy alignment according to another poster on this forum, I don't trust my local dealers at all, yours may be fine). As you can see from the picture of the screen mirroring below, the size of the picture on the phone is the same as the phone mirrored to the dash, so you have to ask the question.. why not just mount the phone on the dash, and not bother with the screen mirroring software ... or indeed the whole unit?

Of course, if you really hate Tom Tom, or you need Spotify, then its easy to flip the car into AA mode when you get in (I think it does it automatically) and away you go! I don't have an Apple phone... Carplay may be much better, and I've seen vids where you can put the map on the car display and have your turn list on the phone, (which is a great use of screen real estate). There are a fair number of enthusiasts for Carplay and AA out there.. I like the idea a lot, but it seems that Google have missed a trick here, their implementation of AA could be so much better, and my phone is running a current android version.

Will write up some install notes with photos for the future buyer. For an RHD car, the under steering wheel arrangement of panels appears to be different to LHD and I always find that if you are pulling panels, its good to have some idea where you can attack them. The electronics are easy to connect, as you're only disconnecting two multiway plugs from the back of the car unit. Although I was using trim tools, you probably only need a screwdriver and a T25 and T30 torx allen keys. If there is any interest, happy to post instructions up here, it is a very easy install.

As the install is not permanent yet I haven't sorted out a 'final' location for the unit, that might be a challenge because of the proximity to the brake unit (behind) and/or the front dash pocket (in front of the unit) in my car. The Chinese suggest 'on top' but not sure this works well for RHD cars. Any ideas welcome on that one from any of the experts out there!

Thanks that's good to know - the only problem with that location is that in my car I have a 'pocket' there, removed entirely in the picture below so you can see the car unit. It should fit when that bit of trim is back in.. but looks a bit tight!

I'd imagine that unless your dealer needs to do a proxy alignment they won't, dealers generally do the least that they can. To reset the service interval on the car that doesn't need a proxy alignment as far as I know.

Update, today I spent a bit more time with AA trying to get it configured the way I would like to use it. I'm running Android 12 on a fairly recent phone that's pretty competent, so thought I would share what that is like here... The device itself seems to be fine, the 'problems' seem to be with Android Auto. So I can make and receive phone calls on the in car speaker and mic and the reversing camera uses the OE one I have in my car.. bad picture below showing the identical screen to normal displayed when you select reverse.

The thing is with AA is that it is really an extension of Google's overall master plan to gather as much info about you as possible and/or sell that information to third parties and use it to sell services and information to you. So, they limit which apps you can use in AA and how you can use AA. The screen configuration appears to be fixed, in that sense the Alfa infotainment is better!

You have a choice of icons down the left hand side of the screen of - (from the top)
(circle) the main menu ,
last used app icon,
('note' icon) - google assistant (streaming),
('bell' icon) phone notifications
('mic' icon) the google assistant (voice) again.

So when you hit what appears to be the 'music' icon you instead get the google assistant asking you what you want to listen to per screenshot above, which would be a paid for streaming service that you will have set up on your phone in the assistant. Which is fine if you like the google assistant, unfortunately I'm both old and old school, and would like to play music from my phone local storage. I started by using HiFi Cast app which allows me to stream from my music servers/PCs as well as listen to local music over bluetooth. It worked fine yesterday but for some strange reason today it decided to only play the first three seconds of a track before repeating. Reading about AA, this is not unusual, so I switched to AIMP which seemed to get rid of that issue.

The box froze when I ran AIMP for the first time but a restart and all was well. I may well have a look in the box to patch in a reset button, would be good to be able to reboot it if it freezes while you're driving along. It might be that wired AA is more reliable in that sense, AA itself is very aggressive in starting up as soon as it sniffs the car box, which is not always what you want, and it tends to keep processes going when it should just shut down cleanly. It doesn't have the feeling of a solid piece of software!

So.. a bit of a mixed bag really, I think I need to keep it on the car for a bit just to see if I can live with it or not!

The net result of all my investigation is that Android Auto just isn't as good as CarPlay by quite some distance. BUT there is an imminent release of AA that looks and behaves a lot better. Check out Coolwalk.. You should get this on any flavour of head unit and adapter box, as all these boxes just project what the phone provides, so will be on your late model Alfas with AA built in, as well as the ones using these adapter boxes. (You can see how AA works by looking at the developer settings in Android Auto on the phone: you can set the video resolution and settings, the head unit is effectively like a TV, just putting out video provided by the phone ).

@147daytona would love to know how you're getting full screen on Android Auto just like my Waze screen projection above?? All the vids I've seen of AA in action have no real full screen option.. (just like the Coolwalk video above using AA on the Audi built in sat nav). Maybe some special magic with the Alfa implementation, that even Audi technicians can't figure out?? Clearly one up on Audi then!

The box is now uninstalled and will shortly be on eBay! Shame that AA is so poor.. next project I need to figure out how to mount my phone!

I'm not aware I've done anything specific.
I have a Samsung S20 phone and connect to the car wirelessly using one of those readily available wireless adapters.
AA starts automatically and defaults to the Google Maps screen, as shown.
The other 2 pictures show Amazon Music through the AA App and also through the SRC key of the Alfa head unit, both in full screen!

I get on with AA pretty well tbh. I have a 2018 car so it is annoying that Alfa didn't provide an update to enable it to go full screen but apart from that I'm pretty happy. I prefer it to having a mount and a phone tbh. Having a wireless dongle definitely improves the experience though. I don't have an iPhone so Carplay isn't an option for me.

Thanks for the tip! Having looked at the videos ... not sure :) The problem is that Android Auto is really designed for a touch screen interface and despite the fact that you can use it, it's really not as good as it could be. Well, if I don't sell my unit this weekend, (or it returns to me once I've sold it!), maybe I'll install it and give it a go. Might as well put the price up to discourage bidders then I can test it again

Firstly, sorry for bumping an old thread! I've had my MY18 Giulia for a week now and absolutely love it, but the one thing that's already irritating me is the lack of carplay/AA which I had in my previous car!

Have been looking into these aftermarket solutions and see the eng-custom one mentioned here a number of times, however they seem to my out of stock and are also ÂŁ350. Looking on Aliexpress, they have what looks to be almost identical units to yours which are considerably cheaper. Only issue is that none mention if the OEM mic is used, whereas the eng-custom does.

Please could you confirm if the OEM mic works OK with carplay, and if so, where you bought the box from? I can't seem to find the Ksmart unit!

Thanks! :)

The OEM mic worked just fine on my unit, as far as I know the Eng Custom one is the same unit with a different splash screen on it. You do have to configure it of course to use the built in mic and not the plug in one. I don't think my box even came with a plug in mic anyways ?!

Mine was from here they still seem to be for sale but a bit expensive nowadays, AliExpress will charge you VAT on it, but I don't believe you'll get hit with anything else on import.

I managed to buy the unit, test it in the thread above, decide I didn't like it and resell at a small profit to someone using it for Carplay who was very happy with it... Best to wait for Black Friday if you can!
