When driving today found I only had 4th gear - no 1,2,3,5,6, or reverse! It was a bit of a struggle to get the 3.2 916 Spider home.

I HOPE it is a selector problem. Have searched the forum and only found folk UNABLE to get 4th. Anyone had similar problem to mine - and/or know how to cure it?

I had a similar problem with our 147. Our gearbox would not allow me to select any gears, then I'd get some, then sometimes I couldn't get it out of gear etc. The crown wheel and output shafts had each lost a tooth and I presume the broken bits had interfered with the selector mechanism. I had my gearbox rebuilt but I think you would find a 2nd hand one from a breakers a cheaper option. I also had a whining noise on the overrun

Thanks rhett71, that is not the most encouraging news - thought it might just be a selector problem. Oh well, I had better start getting at it . . . .
At least to take the gearbox off, you have to take the gear linkage off first - at which point you find one of the cables has popped off a balljoint - hopefully! :lol:

Success - well of a sort! Checked out linkage - no probs. Sat and looked at g/box and wondered if it was possible get the top off when still stuck in 4th. Decided to use (a bit) of brute force and gave it a whack with the palm of hand. Snapped out of 4th and all gears worked perfectly. Re-assembled and has been working fine for the best part of a day.

Reckon it might happen again. I suppose something (the synchro?) got stuck (experts will know better that me), so if it happens again I will get brutal with g/lever and just hope I don't break anything.

Anyone any further thoughts on this?

Reminds me of the time my TS wouldn't select 4th, went to demonstrate how it wouldn't work for a friend.... then it worked. For a day, then quit again the very next time I drove it!

Sorry I couldn't be of help but it just reminded me of that time!

Hey DAL32, what turned out to be the problem with your TS? My TS keeps popping out of fourth as we let the clutch back out when changing in to 4th. Why wouldn't yours select 4th? How did you fix it?
