I can understand that an engine with a direct injection may force more petrol into a cold engine but I was under the impression that due to the nature of the diesel engine it would not have this side effect.

i know someone'll have the answer.

When the engine runs too cold(thermostat stucked open) ecu uses the starter mode and mine had more fuel consumption. Changed the thermostat and it was like before.

Diesels typically run at stoich but they run rich when you are accelerating, or if not as much air is getting in the engine as the ECU thinks.

I don't know if there is a warm-up procedure on the Alfa JTD ECU, such as injecting more fuel to get more heat (not sure how this would work)?
