Hi there. I've got a poorly 54 plate 147 jtdm (140 bhp) Its got a noisy gearbox. I think its the diff as it doesn't make any noise while accelerating or keeping speed but when decelerating it makes a grinding sound from the bottom passenger footwell area (about where the diff is). Its a six speed with about 85,000 on the clock.

I've found a gearbox from a 156 20V 2.4jtdm, and i'm wondering if its compatible? Please help, desperate for an answer? Thanks, Rory

Well that's a good plan, but i haven't done one and don't have the manual to show me the specific torques, shims etc. By the time i've bought the Q2 and gaskets/shims i need ('scuse archaic language here, last diff i rebuilt was for my mini turbo and they are all shims and gaskets) - probably be rtv paste these days? Anyway, by the time i've got those bits and stripped it down and rebuilt it i figured it would be more sense just to change the gearbox for a good unit? let me now what you think

The 20v box is completely different.
It is a GM box and uses different driveshafts (which have "issues"), so it would not be a simple swap if it does actually fit the engine.

I found it on ebay. Its still on if you search alfa 6 speed. Its currently attached to a 2.4jtdm engine and in the front end of an alfa 156 06 model, so with driveshafts and delivery about 360 with a 3 month warranty

If it's the diff, wouldn't it grind on acceleration too?

My money would be on the rear engine mount as it's in the same area. The rubber bushing is likely to be shot. Cheap to replace, and DIY'able

Sounds like the gearbox bearings, the are 4 but only 3 are available from Alfa, we have a fix for this, gearbox needs to be carefully shimmed on rebuild, individual shims not available complete set needs to be purchased

If you send us your car or gearbox we can rebuild it for you
