Hi,

Just bought my 147 from a garage; I know they have problems with there cambelts and asked the garage to check this. They said that this couldnt be checked... does anybody know if it can be checked whether it's been previously replaced etc???

Thanks...

You can't visually check it.
You can get an idea of its condition with it removed, but if you remove it you automatically fit a new one anyway.

So the idea of a "check" is pointless.

If you don't know when it was done last change it.

It will be cheaper than fixing the engine if it snaps.

Also get the tensioners done and I would also recommend changing the Variator.

Most people will keep receipts of expensive repairs and maintenance, so if it isn't there there is a more then evens chance it hasn't been done.

If you are in any doubt and can't find any record of it in the service manual then you are better off to get it done. The 16v is so prone to snapping the belts that its not worth the risk.

The car has done 75500

So I am guessing the cambelt must have been done once. Might get the belt and variator done....

cheers guys...

I would definitely get the variator done. Chances are it will fail just after the belt change if you don't due to sods law.

If it sounds like a diesel when you start the engine it has gone already.

I reckon you could get the belts and variator done for under £300 if you shop around.
