hello all very new to this dont even own a alfa yet bying a 2.0 spider next week but after reading all posts about belts failing &tentioners and wrecked engines i just wonderd are they a common fault i live in far north in elgin are any garages around that can do the work needed many thanks would love to here back before goiing south to bye car :)

How old is the car? and how many miles has it covered?

Dunno about the spider but mine is when its 5 years old or 72,000 miles. (which ever comes first)

Mine is 5 years old now and dont 56k miles but since I am driving to France next month I have caved in and am going to get it done before I go . . . . just incase :(

Fairly sure the 2.0 twin sparks are 36000 miles/3 years for the belt change.
Better to be safe than sorry and get it done straight away.

Yes, 2litre twinspark is every 36,000 miles for belts, tensioners, variator, ect. I'm in a similar position with my GTV, and might take it down to CP garage in Dundee in the absence of any Alfa specialists in Aberdeen (unless anyone has any recommendations asides from AC). Not sure about the Elgin area, but it's worth going somewhere where they know what they're doing with Alfa's. If it's done a few miles, I think it's worth changing the water pump at the same time.

As said TS engines are 36k miles or 3 years whichever is FIRST. I'm sure you can push it further but best not to. I had mine done recently at Donald Mackenzie in Inverness. It's been 4 months and I've driven 3k miles with no issues so I guess they did a good job:lol: Very expensive there though. I had variator changed at same time as if that goes it needs the belts off anyway. I think the 2.0 litre engine also has a balance belt as well? which would also probably need changing. 1.6 TS doesnt have one so I managed to avoid that extra expense.

I have heard CP garage in Dundee is highly recommended but I'm up in Thurso and was too far for me to travel.

Some good advice there Ratatouille. You're right as well about the balancer shaft on the 2.0.
Heard some good noises about CP Garage in Dundee, but never used them yet. Might do after the MiTo is out of warranty though. I'm sure there must be some specialist garages up in the Elgin area though who could look after your new Bella for you Cammy.

wow thanks guys to speedy response all great answers has helped alot should be traveling to englandshire next week to pick up 2.0 spider shame they are all so far away but they have that something special about them have wanted one for years so now going to treat myself other car is grand cherokee big slow and dull many thanks again guys looks like iam going to have lots of support with this site :)

How much roughly would it be to have the cambelt & tensioner changed?

I could do it myself but I have a fairly busy life & I cant afford to have the car off the road for more than a day or 2.

ok lads now have bought my first alfa brought it up from cheshire run was great. smooth nippy lil spider on a w 2000 put it in garage last night so could play around and get to know how it all works .booooooo having my first issue already lol roof will not go back up fully and lock into lid .hope this is not the start of a long headache lid wont stay closed when key is removed helppppppppppp

Try asking in the GTV/Spider technical lounge mate. They're a helpful bunch in there. Hope it's an easy fix for you and we'll see you at a meet soon I hope
