Hi All,

Well car in for cam belt and the blokes are saying that the screws securing the two cam belt idler/followers are rounded off and they cant and they cant get a socket on them.

Is this likely to be correct? I had thought that they were socket head cap screws?

cheers

They are not the easiest bolts to get to but i have done two v6 cambelt changes myself with no problems, The bolts that hold the two skf bearing idlers are held on by allen headed bolts, maybe if your car has had the belt done previously and that person has rounded them off doing them up, or maybe this mechanic has done it trying to undo them without having the allen key inserted into the bolt head properly! Is it being done by a specialist or a non specialist mechanic.

The idler bolts can be a nightmare. Seen loads of V6 engines with chiselled bolt heads on the idlers, where people have just given up and not replaced them.

We will have changed them, we always do. Even if it means taking the engine out to drill them square on. I'm sure your garage mean rounded out on the inside, not the outside. There is only a little bit of bolt head that protrudes from the idler, you may be able to get a turbo socket on it.

Mine had to be cut off with an angle grinder in the end. Very common problem on the V6's
