C635 Gearbox – is it up to a remap?

Thinking of taking the plunge with an alfatune stage 1 remap on my 2.0jtdm. It's a MY 2011 and has the C635 gearbox as far as I can tell.

From what I’ve read the gearbox is good for 350Nm of torque but the remap would take it up to around 430Nm.

Can any remapped late 2.0jtdm (or Tbi – I think they have the same gearbox?) owners give me the benefit of their experience ?

I’m keen because it seems a great mod for the 2.0, but don’t really want to inherit gearbox or other problems as a result....

Are you certain it's C635?

They are meant to be better than the M32s, but not as strong as the F40s....

I think so. I had a look behind and below the battery and took a photo of the top of the gearbox - see attached. Top of photo is towards back of car, bottom of photo is towards front. Couldn't see an F40 stamp and it didn't look like the M32 or F40 shift arms as shown in the links in this thread http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-159-brera-andamp-946-spider/825937-what-gearbox-do-i-have.html. Finally I found a photo of a giulietta 2.0jtdm gearbox online (see attached) and it was a match!

Neither of those pictures look anything like the M32 (cheese box) I had in my 1.9JTDm
or the F40 (nice and strong but weirdly notchy in cold weather box) in my current 2.0JTDm
So I would guess it's probably the C635 (or possibly some other box that's never been mentioned on here?)

Either way I've never read a single thread on here of a problem with the C635 box, only ever the M32 so unless your 2.0 had the only one (or one of a very few) I'd guess it'll be ok with a remap.

regardless of all that, If you are going to Alfatune you really shouldn't worry, just listen to what Guss advises and let him work his magic.
He's the one that will know whats best for your engine/gearbox.

My current car has a service history from Alfatune (which was a huge part of why I bought it)

I've never read a bad thing about Alfatune.

There's every chance its the c635 as my wife's 2011 2.0jtdm definitely has the c635 box and according to several threads on here they were fitted to the last of the JTDM 159s.

Like you I really fancied a stage 1 map for my wifes car but after much research including talking to several of the recommended Alfa specialists opinion was mixed with everyone telling me its a much better box than the M32 but not as strong as the F40 fitted to the earlier JTDM's. In short I concluded the only 100% safe choice was not to remap and instead I simply got Autolusso to map out the EGR which gave slightly better throtte response and peace of mind.

Sorry I know that's not the definitive answer you wanted

Similarly I haven't seen anything specifically about 159's with the c635 gearbox issues after a remap, but I put that down to the fact that the gearbox was only on the late models and therefore not as common and even less common for someone to have a re-mapped one?

Alfatune certainly seems to be the way, in fact the main reason for selecting this one is it's proven quality and praise from owners/specialists.

Its good to know your view all the same, even if the outcome is not quite what I hoped! Option of mapping out the EGR only is something to think about....although I'd have to weigh up against the relative cost. Did you feel it was worth it for the throttle response improvement alone?

I may post something in the Giulietta lounge, tbh was thinking about it anyway but thought I would start here

Pretty much all of them were on the very first Giuliettas built. There was a problem which made them difficult to engage gears (mostly 1st when stationary)

They should all be fixed by now. It wasn't really anything to do with how strong/robust the gearbox is.

Quite a few people have Giuliettas with remaps/tuning boxes and have no issues, but remember the 159 is a heavier car so there will be more stress though the box on acceleration compared to the Giulietta.

I seem to rember one Alfa tuner saying they have remapped to over 230bhp and not had any problems, but a lot of it depends on how the map is done. A nice progressive torque delivery should be fine, but a sudden surge might not.

You can swap the syncro hubs from the early to the later part, it is not a straightforward job

We get quite a few in with this issue

Mine seems to be perfectly fine, but I have no idea if it has ever been fixed or replaced.

Mine was registered December 2010 so is an earlier one.
