As the owner of of a 76k 1.9 jtdm 159 SW that has never been to a garage for any kind of repair ! I can vouch for the reliability of the 159. Have a look at threads in this forum about EGR and DPF failure as it's probably the single biggest bugbear of owners but touch wood I've not had any problems. MPG is not brilliant- low 30s around town and expect low to mid 40s with M/way / mixed driving. This being said I did recently manage 59 mpg on a recent 120 mile m/way cruise using a very light right foot. I've never had to buy parts so can't really comment. Just keep away from main dealers and search out independent garages who care more for the customer and charge more realistic prices. Check if cam belt has ben replaced as you're probably aware it can cost a lot if it goes wrong.

My main gripes with 159 diesel is the low down power- really quite poor until you get up to 3rd gear and/or turbo kicks in, and the tractor like note on start up which IMO harks back to diesels 20 years ago that sounded really rough.

All in all I think 159 sw is a great proposition and for the money 2nd hand a real bargain. Best of luck

Been an owner for a year now, so here's my 2 pence worth!

Check that the cambelt/water pump has been done (if over or near 90k). If not, get it done first thing

Common issues: EGR/DPF problems and steering rack.

Other than that, its just been wear and tear for me.

Happy Days

thanks for your replys.is this egr and dpf thingys just on the petrol or is it on the deisel models as well. another concern i have is as i have been looking on the internet there are quite a few 159 models for sale with quite low milage at what i consider rather cheap for the year compared to audis bmws ect. is this beacuse they are unreliable and keep breaking down or am i being to cautious. i really want a 159 deisel estate around the 2007 year or above but these things worry me.

ERG/DPF is diesels only, but go for a diesel.

They're built like tanks and are as reliable as any other car.

They're cheaper because Alfa's perception is still otherwise.

If you are going for a diesel, the most logical choice between performance and economy is the 1.9 JTDm (diesel) - this is based on the stock engine, nothing to do with EGR/DPF deletes or remapping. The 2.4 is obviously more powerful and a fantastic engine but in standard guise does not return mpg figures near the 1.9 (mid 30's vs. over 40). Tax and insurance is cheaper on the 1.9 also.

I've had 4 159s and I love them, the only major problems I have had were a EGR valve replacement on my first 2.4 JTDm and a clutch replacement on my '58 plate 1.9 JTDm Lusso Sportwagon. I have had the usual minor niggles, creaking clutch on all cars (except the current 2.0 JTDm), creaking windscreen (easy fix with silicone spray or at worst, refitting at dealers), rattles in B-pillar trim, whistling door mirror.

I'd follow sargents advice in his post above for older cars and then get searching - good luck

By the way there are a lot of similar threads in this lounge at the moment so do a search and it will throw up lots more information for you ;)

Do you mean the 1.9 dose not have a erg & dpf problem or are they not fitted.

EGR and DPF set up and potential for failure is the same for the 1.9 and 2.4
as cj said, they are fitted to all diesel 159's; 1.9, 2.0 or 2.4. I am talking about just looking at stock engines as you could get into the arguement of getting a 2.4 and then getting a remap/EGR/DPF delete which gives better economy (to standard 1.9engine levels) and power than a standard 2.4 and 1.9, or you could do the same to a standard 1.9 and then have the power of a standard 2.4 and also better economy than a standard 1.9................;)

Another 159 lusso sw owner here. Only had mine since June but nothing spent so far except diesel:)

No steering rack or dpf issues yet at all. She's a 58 plate with 39k miles and economy is my only gripe really. My average drops if I just do the short commute to work but with a few longer trips I'm averaging as per sig.
