Hi guys new to site and need info! My 156 (1.6 Tspark) decided to strip timing belt 64k, car is 2000-2001 so dont want to spend value of car to keep. Got chance of GOOD 146 junior engine 2000 model.

Q: will 146 1.6 Tspark engine be suitable donor?

It should be straightforward. Anything that's different should be swappable with what's on the 156 engine.

Put a new timing belt kit on at the same time

I have a nasty feeling the engine is different.

I know the engine in the 1.6 147 is a different block to the one in the 146 but I am not sure whether the 156 used the same engine as the 147.

the 147 unit was besed on the 1.4TS and has a slightly shorter block IIRC.

There are some differences but I'm sure if you don't tell the 146 engine that you've fitted it to a 156, it'll never know. just check the various sensors and things like the thermostat to see if you need to put the 156 ones onto the 146 unit - particularly the cam sensor - if you need to change this you may need to change the exhaust cam pulley as well. Obviously retain the ECU from the 156 engine on the replacement. You'll need to change the clutch from the 156 onto the new engine too - maybe change the driven plate while you are at it?

From what I gather the 147 1.6 was based on the 1.4 TS with a larger bore where as the 146 1.6 was based on the 1.8 with a smaller bore. Hence they have a different stroke.

I suppose you could change the sensors no problem but I would worry about other differences.
