I have owned my Brera 2.4 for 7 years and had a warning of surface rust on the front subframe on the last two MoTs. When searching this forum and discovering that this is a common problem I realised that I should do something about it urgently. I was horrified to discover that a new front subframe was over £900 and that this is without fitting and presumably still wouldn’t be any better than the original part.
Fortunately, a friend recommended a good mechanic locally that does body repairs and refurbishing old classics so I took it to him to have a look at the state of the parts. The result was a quote for just over £900 to have the front subframe and the rear suspension removed and treated.
They did the following:
Once complete I had to have the 4-wheel steering geometry reset which I had done at a tyre specialist.
I went to see progress half way through the work and found all the components hanging up in the spray booth and just about to be baked. If I can find out how to post some photos I will attach them to this post.
The guy that did this for me couldn’t believe that the metalwork had been fitted at the factory without anything more than some form of metallic dip. There is no paint on these parts at all. I must say that I feel much happier knowing that the under body parts are all now properly protected from the elements. Shame that it wasn’t done at the factory.

They did the following:
- Strip out front subframe and rear suspension
- Shot blast to remove all traces of rust
- Prepare, epoxy prime and repaint front subframe and rear suspension components using 2k Delfleet UHS black
- Internal Wax oil of underside body using Kent Wax Coat water and salt resistant anti-corrosion coating
- Refit all components to vehicle and wax oil front subframe and rear suspension arms.
