I've recently noticed one of my brakes seems to judder under light braking - any ideas what might causes this.

I went on a 250mile drive yesterday and it seemed better towards then end but still there. Almost like an uneven rim on a bike that catches the brake more at the kink.

There's lots of things that can do it, which I'm sure others well tell you quickly. Warped discs for example.

One I discovered (the hard way) - and to be clear, this is an extreme possibility. I'm not saying this is your problem, just don't rule it out if everything else is a dead end - is your driveshafts.

Check your inner joints for play if you can't seem to find an obvious solution.

Could also be tyres under light braking. As they wear you may find some soft spots that feel like a judder but you are just noticing the profile difference. Disc problems are usually worse under heavier braking. How much wear do you have on the tyres?

Take all the wheels off (front and back) and give both the brake disc and wheel surfaces (where they meet) a good clean (maybe with a wire brush or wire wheel on a drill dependent upon how dirty they are). Give the surfaces a very light smear of copper grease (makes it easy to remove the wheels later). Even the slightest bit of rust, dust or other foreign body could cause the judder when braking.

Very unlikely that your discs have warped IMHO (assuming they are of reasonable quality).

I had that, I needed to discs
Me too, new discs and pads and as good as gold now, cant remember what I paid at Autolusso but it was a lot less than I was expecting.

My judder was hardly noticable at low speed around town driving, yes it was there but not thought that much of a problem but braking at speed on the motorway had me on the phone to Laurence straight away

It's not necerssarily 'warped' discs, but if you brake hard and keep your foot on the brake when stationary if can leave deposits on the disc, they have different friction properties that feel like vibrations from a warped disc. I had this, resolved with new discs

Thanks guys - some good info there to try.

Any ideas on new discs as out of work at the moment so trying to keep spending in check.

If you go the new Brakes and Discs route I paid around £500 to £550 off the top of my head from Intaservices in Leicester.

I got a quote from another Alfa specialist in Coventry for nearer to £800.

Obviously depends I bet on where you live.

I got the front discs & pads sorted for £150 including fitting (Brembo discs & Mintex pads) on my 2.2 Spider.
I think it's time I looked at the rears...

For the fronts I sourced my own, only got charged £80 for fitting (including fitting of two front tyres I supplied also!).

For ALL Ti verions of the 159, you need 330mm discs (for 1.9's with Lusso etc spec, they have 305mm discs). Pads wise, these are the 77mm ones (71.5mm ones go with the 305mm) discs
Strongly recomend the padd fitting kit, it contains the pins which often corrode into the pads (at least one of mine had to be cut out!)

Rears on the Ti 1.9 are the same as Lusso etc 1.9 size at 278mm (2.4 Ti or normal spec are all 292mm)

If using Mintex for fronts, the parts for the 1.9 Ti (or indeed any Ti) I had fitted were:
Pads:MDB1950
Discs:MDC1740 (under £100 each)
Fitting kit (pins etc):MBA1694 (

Be aware there seems to be a load of different codes, even for the same part (mintex being an example where I found 3/4 different codes for the same part, assume there are some different compounds)

Had a slight shimmer on the fronts about a month ago. Discs off and a light skim made the shimmer go away. The guys said that the discs and pads were otherwise good as new.

Light judder on old disc is usually "imprinted" disc. Look it up on the web. This is most often caused by lightly binding brakes that overheat the pad and disc or by leaving your foot on the brake after using the brakes very hard. If you go the route of new pads and discs (normal cure) be sure to have the brakes thoroughly cleaned and checked so that they aren't still binding. If you don't use a specialist Alfa garage warn whoever does the work that the pins usually seize and are damaged removing them so spares should be bought before the work starts - they are only a few pounds.

Brake judder on NEW discs is usually caused by the hubs not being thoroughly cleaned of rust and dirt before fitting the discs. That means the disc doesn't fit perfectly flat and judders under braking. Sadly once this has happened cleaning the hub and refitting the disc rarely works as the discs will already be permanently warped and new discs are again needed.

I this situation, before spending lots of money, I'd give them a really good hard workout - if it's caused by a build-up of friction material on the disc surfaces that may well clear it.
