Today had a complete brake light failure on my 96 spider. From what I have read seems that the problem is often the brake light pedal switch getting sticky. Wondering where exactly this switch is... is it literally the alfa romeo logo on the pedal that twists off? some clarification on how to go about dealing with this switch would be great, thanks!

Danechr,

Just look under the pedal and you'll see wires going into a plastic tube with what looks like a button on the end.

So is that the source of the microswitch-like click I hear whenever I lightly touch the brakes?

No, not the rubber pad.

It's higher up nearer the pivot.

Have a look here :
FIAT ePER

Item 6 is the switch. The arrow points to its location ( the black smudge above the three pedals ).

I had that happen on my twinny it's pretty straight forward replacement, I think the first time it happened I stripped it down cleaned it and got another 12 months out of it :)
