As part of my engine rebuild I will change the shells.
My nearest Alfa dealer is in 90 miles away so I thought I would try the local Fiat dealer.

I gave them the part number off the shell I have removed 7646454. They couldnt find it, so after giving them my chassis number they said it has been replaced by 2 part numbers
71718285
71728361
£26.82 incl VAT for one of each

I called the Alfa dealer to check. He used the original part number and said it had been updated, didnt give me new number, and the cost would be £12.78 incl vat for 2.

and yet when i go to the online eper I get yet another part number 71752782

confused to say the least and want to get them ordered. Anybody replaced the same part recently and know the new part number?

71752782 should be the replacement. This is the original size SP=1,527-1,531.

Than thicker oversize bearings are available for crank re-grinds:
71752783 - SP=1,530-1,534
71752784 - SP=1,533-1,537
71752785 - SP=1,590-1,594

But to be honest I was always confused by alfa availability of standard and oversize bearings, piston rings, liners, pistons.... They always changed the part numbers, marking way (colors, dimensions....) I hate to order bottom end stuff for Alfa.

If your not sure take the crank and a conrod to a local engine remanufactures get them to measure the crank and to order you aftermarket shells chances are they will be the same manufactures that Alfa use...

here are a few

http://www.yell.com/ucs/UcsSearchAction.do?keywords=engine+remanufacturers&companyName=&location=aberdeen&ssm=0&scrambleSeed=78162816&M=0&autocomplete=kwlo&x=26&y=14

During my rebuild i only went to the dealer for one part the rest i bought from either eurocarparts.co.uk, a local motorfactors or the engine remanufactures.
The one par i had to to to fiat for (as alot of fiat engines used them) was the fly wheel crank oil seal...£48 ouch

latest update on the confusing world of half-bearings.

I was on the phone again on friday to a local fiat dealer, the person I got seemed to be covering for somebody as they were unsure of how the system worked.

They did manage to get to part number 71752782 from my original part number but then offered me colours.

From reading the many threads where shells are mentioned I think red are the standard size. Correct?

I will call back tomorrow as I got the head off today.
I need piston rings as well, are these main dealer items?

No piston rings can be bought for 1/5 of the dealer price from a engine builders as mentioned above do a yell search for engine remanufacures they are genraly 100 times more helpful than a dealer for this kind of thing. I paid £16 per pot for my piston rings a dealer i rang wanted £120 +vat and P&P for a set. I'd recommend taking a piston in with you...Same goes for shells, and all the engine gaskets inc HG
