Battery Trickle Charger Question

3222 Views 21 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Imoan2
Hi folks,
I do apologise if this has been covered before but I can't find a definitive answer. I have a 2018 Giulia QV and I want to connect a battery conditioner. Do I have to use the battery connections in the boot or can I use the ones under the bonnet (the ones you use to jump start the car)?
Thanks in advance
Alan

You can use both.
just make sure that if you do decide to connect via the boot to use the recommended connection points as specified in the manual, to avoid bypassing the IBS sensor.
Had my trickle charger about 6 months now and attach to the battery as shown below. No need to prise the positive cover off or any other shenanigans. Works perfectly.

Difficult to see in the pic, but looks like you connected the negative lead directly to the battery negative terminal. This is not recommended, as this will bypass the IBS sensor, resulting in the car not knowing the exact charge in the battery

Better yet, get a Ctek charger and install the supplied "connect" lead to the battery positive and grounded on the bodywork. Simple plug and play then.

I'll get a picture of mine later.

There you go. The red lead with the black/orange connector allows me to plug in my charger easily. It's earthed just above the battery through an existing (square) hole in the bodywork.

I did a bit of research on this matter, as well as consulted a senior tech at my Alfa dealership.

I'm happy to be proven wrong, but it was confirmed that the IBS is in fact connected to the negative terminal, ergo you must connect the negative cable thereto.

If you don't, the car won't know/learn your battery's charge and ability to start/stop (which is this car's worst feature in any event).

Do you have a circular from Alfa, or other reliable source that suggests otherwise? I'm always happy to change my ways if it will hurt my beauty... (y);)

Just in case you miss it, see my response below.... (y)
if you connect the negative trickle charger lead to a car chassis point, you are always 100% sure to go via the IBS sensor, as required by Alfa. This is after all the way all car systems are powered.
In the car user manual you can see you can also connect alternatively to the correct nut (which is NOT the battery negative pole itsself) on the battery, however chassis is easier as there is no chance of wrong connections

side note: as said, IBS sensor is indeed connected to battery negative pole. All main current is routed to chassis via the shunt of the IBS sensor, so all current going into and out of battery can be/is measured to get a realtime value for battery charge at any moment

I had the C-Tek Comfort Panel fitted at the dealer before I picked the car up and it was connected to the 10mm nut on the negative battery post.

I reinforced the battery door with fibreglass matt and fitted it in the door along with a fuse panel so I could have the auxilary power outlets.

I want to fit an auxiliary power to the boot. How did you do this exactly?

I bought this
and used sticky back velcro to attach it to the top of the battery.
Then wired to the + & - terminals

I can take a picture during the week if you need it.

Yes please, that would be very helpful

I often carry a powered cool box in the boot and have to trail the lead through to the auxiliary outlet under the armrest which isn't ideal so a socket in the boot would be perfect. My giulietta has one in the boot as standard so a little disappointed that Alfa didn't do the same on the giulia.
I have to be honest I was surprised there wasn't one as standard.
I too carry a cold/hot box and as a lot of things now have USB charger cables that's why I fitted that also.
I'll take a couple of pics tomorrow.
Cheers. That's really helpful! Just got back from a long weekend away and the trailing cool/hotbox cable was a nuisance especially with a dog on the back seat!

I used mine for the first time last night, I set it to AGM but now I'm unsure if it is an AGM battery?
I cycled the mode button so the AGM light was illuminated but after about three hours the regular battery light was illuminated also.
The battery status never got past stage five?
Oh! and I have the C-Tek comfort panel that is connected directly to the battery.

Any illumination 😀 I would be grateful for.
