Well I spent some time doing a search for banging/cracking/noisey wipers and nothing seems to come up. I can't believe I'm the first one as both my 156's do it. When the wiper reaches the top of it's stroke and the wiper begins to return the drivers one makes a huge crack noise on the screen. It only seems to happen when the wipers are really on too fast. On the JTD I never run the wipers very fast unless it is raining very hard and so it doesn't do it but if the are run fast in lighter conditions they will make the cracking noise. The GTA has auto wipers and so does it's own speed and runs far to fast IMO but this means that it continually makes this cracking noise at the top of the wiper stroke. Can this be solved with new wipers or adjustment of anything as in the end for most of my hour journey I just flipped the wiper stalk when I needed it which became oh so tiresome and very annoying.

Mine is really loud. Louder than someone banging on the window.

I knew you would say that   i mean if its on about 25-30 (when you turn it up/down volume numbers) could it be the plastic grill at the bottom of the windscreen has moved slightly and the arm is catching it? I suppose the faster it moves the harder it will hit (if it is hitting that) so that would make it louder? Just a thought :)

Noise is from the top of the window wiper and it doesn't foul on the a pillar either. 20-30 on mine is almost silent as my radio is poo

Yeah it could be that lj, as the guys at red Motori who maintain my car adjusted the wipers because they said it was hitting the plastic trim, can't say I noticed it to be honest, so could be that joss?

I'm sure mine always did it.
Stopped after fitting Bosch AeroTwin blades though.

Apart from the sound do the wipers go about their business smoothly or is there a jolt/jump at any point? I ask this a I had a T reg 156 2.5 V6 that had wiper issues, subsequently they had to be serviced from the arms right back to the motor, they may need adjusting as inevitably with alfas age takes over and things work them selves free and become sloppy.
Also does the sound come from the screen or further down where the mechanism is?

I'll check at lunch but I'm not convinced it's at the bottom. I'll stand outside the car in the rain!

I did think this on the JTD when I did the same. I might go grab some at lunch.

The mechanism is worn slightly and I can hear it under the dash ( creaking noise). I will be getting a new mechanism at some point soon but the crack is def at the top of the screen right as the wipers flip over.

Are the wiper blades running off the windscreen and hitting the a pillar?
As said ealier mate it is defo not touching the A pillar:)

I have never used mine on full speed so can't offer any advice!
But you don't get a choice with the autowipe. It seems to decide that full speed/slow continual is required when I would only use intermitent on the JTD

Shame I can't be there to hear this Joss, thinking logically it has to be related further down. I have had nothing but issues with wipers over the years and fault finding can be a pain in the ****, funny enough I haven't got this issue at the mo touch wood!

Mate it seems as though they need a damn good service, the guys at my local alfa specialist rectified my problem by replacing the mech, tightening and adjusting the wipers arms accordingly. I seriously doubt this comes down to worn wipers unless their badly fitted which I'm sure you've probably checked.
