I have searched regarding the 2.0TS Balance belt yet I still havent found a full answer. I have a 2003 2.0TS 147 with around 84,000 on the clock. Generally she is in good condition apart from the variator knock on start up. However recently I noticed a bit of a strange noise after using the A/c one day. I took of the AUX belt, fired her up but the noise was still there. So next stage was to take off the cam cover and listen. Once that was off the noise seemed to disappear some what, however I noticed the balance belt looks VERY loose to me...to the point I can almost slip it off. I can easily move it up and down, I can also see the tensioner flexing. When wobbling the belt I can also hear the rear balancer " knocking " a little but as in this video...

Am I right in thinking the belt is shot so I had better replace it and the tensioner or could I just cut the belt off and leave it. Would that be advisable given the age / mileage of the car?

Well, you shouldn't run it with it like that that's for sure. I would cut it off and plan to get it and tensioner changed soon.

yes, no harm in cutting it off. if for any reason you don't like how it feels after, you can refit a new belt and tensioner at any time.

if the current belt breaks and get entangled with the timinge belt, you're up **** creek.

Ill slice it off in the morning guys thank you.....does anyone know which way the belt rotates for when I put the new belt on?

same direction as the timing belt: clockwise
